K-Tribe Falls to Hillcats 3-1

Two errors lead to two unearned runs as Kinston fell to Lynchburg 3-1 Saturday night in Virginia.

Kinston starter Joey Mahalic was solid early, giving up just two hits through his first three innings of work. In the top of the fourth inning Lynchburg's Chris Richburg reached with a single. A Kyle Day double then moved Richburg to third base. With the infield in, Kinston's Karexon Sanchez cut down a Jose Gualdron infield chopper and caught Day off the bag at second. With Richburg still at third and one out in the inning, a Mahalic pickoff attempt at first base was mishandled by Jeremie Tice, allowing Richburg to score. Tice was charged with the error, as Lynchburg took a 1-0 lead

Lynchburg starting pitcher Justin Walker was solid early as well, limiting Kinston to just three hits through the first four innings. The K-Tribe would finally get to Walker in the fifth inning when Donnie Webb doubled with two outs. Bo Greenwell followed with an RBI single to tie the score at one.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Lynchburg's Brodie Greene reached on a one-out single. Mahalic delivered a pick-off throw into the dirt that skipped down the right field line and allowed Greene to reach third base. Mahalic was charged with the error. Greene would score on a sacrifice fly later in the inning to give Lynchburg a 2-1 lead. Mahalic (4-8) took the loss giving up five hits and two unearned runs in five innings. Mahalic walked two and struck out one. Walker (2-1) gathered the win, giving up five hits and one run in six innings. He walked one and struck out eight.

Lynchburg would add a run in the bottom of the eighth off of Kinston reliever Chris Jones. Jones gave up two hits in three innings of relief work. Greenwell and Abner Abreu each had two hits for Kinston. Kinston outhit Lynchburg eight to seven on the night.

The series and road trip will end for Kinston Sunday night in Lynchburg. Game time 6:05 pm with T.J. House on the mound for the K-Tribe. The Indians will begin a five game in four day homestand on Monday at Historic Grainger Stadium.
