Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - Winston-Salem rode the bat of Lee Cruz and the arm of Anthony Carter into first place as they defeated Kinston 8-3 on Saturday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Cruz tallied three hits and tied a Dash season-high with five RBI as Winston-Salem (23-25) jumped past Salem into first place in the Southern Division. Cruz matched Brent Morel's five RBI performance on April 26 against Wilmington. Dash starting pitcher Anthony Carter (4-3) was also impressive as he tossed seven innings and held Kinston to two runs and scattered eight hits to collect the win.
The Dash jumped on Kinston starting pitcher Russell Young early with three consecutive singles, including an RBI single by Cruz to give Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead. The Indians answered right back in the top of the second inning when Lucas Montero delivered an RBI triple then scored on a ground out by Richard Martinez to put Kinston in front 2-1.
Winston-Salem's bats came alive once again in the third inning second baseman Dale Mollenhauer singled with one out and first baseman Jimmy Gallagher walked. After a double-steal with two outs put the runners at second and third, Cruz lined a two-run single to return the lead to the Dash at 3-2.
A four-run fourth helped Winston-Salem pull away. The inning started with center fielder Salvador Sanchez reaching on an infield single. The hit snapped a streak of 34 consecutive at-bats without a base hit. After designated hitter Mike Grace was hit by a pitch, catcher Logan Johnson moved up the runners with a ground out and third baseman Kyle Shelton delivered a two-run single. Mollenhauer followed with a single and Gallagher walked to load the bases. Once again, Cruz came through with another two-run single to extend the Dash advantage to 7-2.
Shortstop Greg Paiml tacked on a run for Winston-Salem with an RBI single in the sixth inning while Kinston plated a run against Dash reliever Wander Perez on a Lonnie Chisenhall RBI ground out. Young (0-3) stayed winless after the southpaw allowed seven runs on eight hits in just 3.2 innings pitched.
The Dash continues their ten-game home stand when they conclude their three-game series against Kinston on Sunday afternoon at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Winston-Salem will send RHP Charlie Shirek (7-1, 3.96) to the mound, while Kinston is expected to start LHP Eric Berger (3-2, 2.44). The first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Single-game tickets are also available for games at Wake Forest Baseball Park and can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
