March 19, 2022 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The Saint John Sea Dogs (30-15-1-3) came out on top and extended their win streak to nine games in a 6-2 win against the Moncton Wildcats (21-19-5-1) at TD Station on Saturday. Two goals apiece from Philippe Daoust, Ryan Francis, and Cam MacDonald got the Sea Dogs the win in front of their home crowd.
Both netminders were playing against their former teams, Thomas Couture in net for Saint John and Jonathan Lemieux for Moncton. Couture made 19 saves on 21 shots and Lemieux stopped 34 of 40 Sea Dogs shots.
The Sea Dogs took a two goal lead and held Moncton shotless for the first eight minutes of play. The first goal came from Ryan Francis, finishing a passing play from the slot on the power play at 3:46. Philippe Daoust scored next, the thirteenth goal of the season for the newly signed Ottawa Senators prospect, tapping in a net-front pass from William Villeneuve at 7:41.
Ryan Francis was sent to the box for interference at 11:01 and Vincent Sévigny joined him on a hooking call 36 seconds later, sending play to 5-on-3 for 1:24. Maxim Barbashev took advantage of the extra ice and scored the first of the night for the visiting team, sending a shot from the slot to the back of the net.
At 15:40, Daoust scored his second of the period with a slick move, pulling the puck around former Sea Dog Jonathan Lemieux in a highlight reel goal.
A cross-crease pass to Wildcats top scorer Brooklyn Kalmikov made it 3-2 with 1:43 remaining in the period.
Shots after the first were 15-8 for Saint John.
Three penalties to the home team in the first half of the period gave the penalty kill lots of time on the ice, and they were successful each time. The Wildcats began to close the gap in shots, but it was the Sea Dogs that scored in the second frame, when Cam MacDonald tipped a shot from Jérémie Poirier at 15:44 to make the lead 4-2 going into the final frame.
Shots after the second were 22-16 for Saint John.
The third period went by quickly with few whistles interrupting the flow.
A slashing penalty to Francesco Iasenza at 10:52 gave the Sea Dogs power play an opportunity to strike. The penalty was killed successfully by Moncton, but soon after, Ryan Francis was able to score his second of the evening, picking up a rebound off an attempt by Daoust at 13:05.
Cam MacDonald joined Daoust and Francis in scoring his second goal of the night, picking up a netfront pass from Raivis Ansons and firing it to the back of the net, making it a 6-2 win in front of the home crowd at TD Station.
Final shots were 40-21 for Saint John.
