Danville, VA - The D-Braves beat the Bluefield Blue Jays 6-2 on Sunday afternoon to take the series finale and avoid being swept. Danville was able to score three runs in the third and seventh innings while their pitching staff slowed down the hot bats of the Blue Jays.
The number nine batter and catcher for the Blue Jays today, Leo Hernandez, led off the top of the third with a homerun shot to left-center field on the first pitch he saw. Greg Ross threw Hernandez a fastball down the plate that Hernandez took advantage of. It was Hernandez's second hit in a Bluefield uniform and his first homerun of 2011.
Danville responded in the bottom of the third with two straight singles by Kyle Kubitza and Sam Munson. With one out, Kenny Fleming singled to right field that loaded the bags for Elmer Reyes. Reyes singled to right himself allowing Kubitza to score and leaving the bases juiced. Brandon Drury drove a ball to center field for the third straight D-Braves single and fifth of the inning. The hit scored Munson, and Fleming would score a batter later on a William Beckwith sacrifice fly. The D-Braves had a 3-1 lead.
The game stayed that way until the fifth inning. Carlos Ramirez tripled to deep center field to lead off for the Jays. Leo Hernandez added his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to right field. The game now stood at 3-2. The end of the fifth inning also ended Greg Ross's day. Ross improved his record to 3-0 by pitching five innings, giving up two earned runs on just four hits. He struck out six batters and only walked one.
The Braves added three more in the seventh. After Bluefield intentionally walked Elmer Reyes with one out to put runners at first and third, they had to face Drury's scorching bat. Drury made them pay when he drove a ball to the left-center field fence for a double. The play made it 4-2 D-Braves. The Braves tacked on two more to make it 6-2 after a series of walks by Les Williams.
Danville pitchers were lights out from the sixth frame on out. JR Graham came in relief and pitched three solid innings of one hit ball. He struck out three and earned his first hold of the year. Cody Martin finished off Bluefield in the ninth retiring the side in order while striking out the final two.
Danville pitchers finished the day giving up just five hits and striking out a total of 11. The Braves hitters went 4-for-13 with runners in scoring position. They left ten on base. Danville's record improved to 9-11. It was just their third home victory of the season.
The Braves have their first scheduled off day of the season on Monday and resume on Tuesday. They will start a three game set at home against the Kingsport Mets. All games will start at 7:00 pm.
