Pulaski Mariners News Release

Pulaski, VA (July 10, 2011) - Great pitching by the Cardinals held the Mariners in check tonight as they couldn't avoid the sweep, losing to the Cardinals 5-1. The Mariners had their chances early in the game, leaving six runners stranded in the first three innings.

The Cardinals struck first in the second inning on two out solo homerun by third baseman Roberto De La Cruz. With the score 2-0 after four innings, Johnson City tallied two more runs in the fifth on a two out 2RBI double that scored Steven Ramos and Matt Williams.

The lone run for the Mariners came in the sixth inning when catcher David Villasuso knocked a triple to the left center wall that scored Daniel Paolini from second.

The Cardinals went on to add an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by David Bergin that would score Kolby Byrd to push their lead to what would eventually be the final score, 5-1.

Jamal Austin had a productive day at the plate for the Mariners going 2-3 with a walk. David Villasuso also contributed, having a 3-4 night with the only RBI.

Josh Lucas earned the win for the Cardinals, allowing no runs over five innings of work. Jose Valdivia was hit with the loss for the Mariners allowing four runs on four hits and walking three.

The Mariners hit the road tomorrow to try to break their four game losing streak against the Elizabethton Twins. The next home stand for the Mariners will begin July 18th when they take on the Danville Braves.
