Danville Otterbots News Release

Pulaski, VA.-The Braves defense at times tonight seemed to be a bit sloppy. But they were able to overcome four errors and win 5-4 in extra innings. It was the D-Braves pitching that kept them in the game on Saturday night.

The Braves were forced to come from behind in tonight's win.

Bluefield got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when the Danville defense faltered. Bluefield centerfielder, Kevin Pillar, led off the inning by getting on due to an error by William Beckwith. The next batter singled to centerfield and Kurt Fleming misplayed it which led to Bluefield having second and third with no one out. After a walk, Aaron Munoz singled, scoring two. Danville starter, Daniel Winnie, was able to escape the second with no further damage.

Then in the top of the fourth, leadoff hits by Tony Mueller and Kyle Kubitza helped the Braves even up the score. Nick De Santiago grounded out to second, but Mueller was able to run home from third. Brandon Drury then singled to centerfield and Kyle Kubitza scored to knot the game at two.

Just an inning later Danville was able to take the lead. After Myles Duvall relieved Ajay Meyer, Elmer Reyes led off with a single. With runners on first and third due to a Blue Jay error, Tony Mueller came through in the clutch. He tripled on a fly ball to deep center field putting the D-Braves up 4-2. Mueller ended the night 2-for-4 with a run scored, and two runs batted in.

It was in the eighth inning that Danville's slumping defense cost them again. With Matt Chaffee (1-0) now pitching for Danville, the Blue Jays put two runners on. Then a fielding error by third baseman Kyle Kubitza, his second error of the night, loaded the bases with just one out. Matt Chaffee threw a wild pitch which let one runner cross home plate. Bluefield tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

In the tenth, the Braves would put two runners on before Elmer Reyes moved them to second and third with one out. With Kurt Fleming batting, Milciades Santana matched Matt Chaffee with a wild pitch of his own that would score Chase Larsson and the winning run. The run was charged to Ian Kadish (0-1) because Santana relieved him mid-inning. Kadish would also get the loss on record.

Chaffee remained in the game for the bottom of the tenth and got the Blue Jays out in order. He had two strikeouts in the tenth inning. He pitched three strong innings of relief, not giving up a hit, walking just one, and striking out four. He earned his first professional win. Gus Schlosser also pitched a brilliant game for Danville, pitching three of his own innings, not letting a runner reach base while striking out four.

The series concludes tomorrow night when Ernesto Silva (0-1, 11.25 ERA) take the mound against Blue Jay's Mitchell Taylor (0-0, 10.80 ERA). The Danville Braves will open up their home season on Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m. when they take on the Princeton Rays. The first 1,000 fans at the game will receive a 2011 magnet schedule.
