Danville Otterbots News Release
JOHNSON CITY, TN- Gerardo Rodriguez hit a two-run home run in the first inning and the Danville offense exploded from there-scoring a season high 12 runs in route to a 12-2 victory over the Johnson City Cardinals on Sunday.
Rodriguez, playing in his first game since last Wednesday's victory over Princeton, now owns sole possession of the Appalachian League lead in homers with six, in RBIs with 18 and in slugging percentage at .841.
For Danville (10-3) and Manager Paul Runge, this series with Johnson City can suffice as a measuring stick to just how much talent this Braves' squad possesses. The Cardinals (8-5) are the only winning team the Braves have played in a series. With the victory, Danville goes up 3.5 games over Pulaski in the East Division. Pulaski has lost their last three games.
After Rodriguez's blast in the first inning, the Danville bats caught a contagious fire. Jon Gilmore led off the second inning with a single, his first of a team-high three hits on the night. Jesus Sucre and Randy Gress had consecutive doubles to push the lead to 4-0, Danville. Will White, starting his first game of the season as DH, flared a singled to right field that plated Gress, extending the lead to 5-0, Danville.
After a scoreless third frame, Danville again churned out a productive inning. In the fourth, Danville got five runs on three hits, extending the lead to 10-0. Randy Gress began the frame after he reached first base on a passed third-strike. After Will White was hit by a pitch and a Shayne Moody walk, L.V. Ware brought in two with a single to right field that pushed the lead to 7-0. Rodriguez hit a deep sac fly to right field that brought in Moody from third base that extended the difference to eight runs. Matt Kennelly, substituted into the game earlier, topped off the inning with a single to left field that plated Ware and Chris Shehan, to extend the lead to 10-0.
Pitcher Cody Railsback (2-0) got the victory in relief for Danville. He pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief in place of Tim Ladd, giving up two earned runs. Ladd had an excellent showing himself-throwing 4.2 innings of shutout ball on just four hits. He was just an out away from earning his first victory of the season.
Danville and Johnson City play the second game of the series tonight at 7 pm.
