Dallas Sidekicks News Release
Allen, TX - Sidekicks lose 7-3 for the first round of the 2021-2022 MASL Playoffs against the Kansas City Comets. This is the Sidekicks first time in the playoffs since the 2014-2015 season.
In the first quarter, both sides had a lot of chances, but Sidekicks Julio Varela opened up the scoring sheet with the assist by Bradlee Baladez. The Sidekicks kept the score 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.
In the beginning moments of the second quarter, Comets player, Lesia Thetsane, had an early shot on goal, but was blocked by Cody Ellis. The Sidekicks lead was taken away by Ignacio Flores making it a tie game. In the 4 minute mark, Mike Jones made a speedy run down the field and passed to Jamie Lovegrove in the box which was blocked by Comets goalkeeper, Neto. At the 1:48 mark, Christian Anderaos made a fast run on goal and shot, but was blocked by Gamboa. Despite these shots, the score remained tied 1-1.
In the 11:22 mark of the 3rd quarter, Luiz Morales took a shot during the restart, but it was blocked by Neto. In the 10:25 mark, Lesia Thetsane shot and scored making the score 2-1 Comets. Shortly after, Comets, John Sosa, scored at the restart. The Comets scored another goal making the score 4-1. With the Sidekicks losing momentum quickly, the Comets score another goal. However, that goal was challenged by the Sidekicks for Kansas City having too many men on the field. After further review, the goal was reversed and the score remained 4-1. The Sidekicks found some momentum as Jamie Lovegrove scored off the restart making the score 4-2 Comets.
In the 4th quarter, Gamboa made 2 saves, but the 3rd was not the charm with another goal by Kansas City. Kansas City used their one challenge on a handball penalty that possibly occurred outside of the penalty box. After review, the handball occurred outside of the penalty box, so Sidekicks did not receive a penalty kick. Quickly after that, the Comets scored an empty-net goal. Two minutes left in the 4th quarter, Sidekicks Sebastian Mendez scored making the score 6-3 Comets. The Comets capitalized on their win in the last minute making the final score 7-3.
The Sidekicks will go on the road to Kansas City for Round 2 of the MASL Playoffs on Tuesday, April 12th at 7 PM.
