New England Revolution News Release
Foxborough, Mass.- The New England Revolution announced today that defender/midfielder Marshall Leonard and goalkeeper Doug Warren have re-signed contracts with Major League Soccer to remain with the Revs, and that midfielder/defender Jeff Larentowicz has been elevated to the team's 18-man senior roster. Per MLS and team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
The Revolution also announced that Wayne Penniman, P.T., A.T.C., CSCS, has been hired as the team's head athletic trainer and that developmental goalkeeper T.J. Tomasso has left the team.
The 2007 season will be Leonard's sixth with the team, while it will be both Warren and Larentowicz's third with the club.
Leonard, 26, originally drafted by the Revolution in the fourth round (45th overall) of the 2002 MLS SuperDraft out of Virginia, has appeared in 63 career games for the Revs, making 52 starts, mainly at left back and on the left side of the midfield. Originally signed as a Developmental roster player in 2002, Leonard earned a senior roster spot in 2004 and has gone on to score one goal and add two assists in his career with New England. He missed most of the 2006 season after suffering a season-ending injury to his right Achilles on March 25. Prior to the injury and resulting reconstructive surgery, Leonard appeared in one game, playing 76 minutes against Kansas City on April 15.
Warren, 25, did not see any first-team action in 2006, but made his New England debut on Aug. 17, 2005 against the Colorado Rapids in place of Matt Reis, who had been ejected from the game with a red card. Warren then earned his first-career MLS victory in the following outing on Aug. 27, at Gillette Stadium, a 2-1 win against his former club, D.C. United, who selected him in the second round (14th overall) in the 2003 MLS SuperDraft. Warren was originally acquired by the Revs through a trade with D.C. on Jan. 20, 2005. He has been the primary starter in goal for the Revs' reserve division team since 2005.
Larentowicz, 23, was originally drafted by the Revs in the fourth round (45th overall) in the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft. After playing one minute of first-team action in his rookie season, Larentowicz developed into an everyday player in 2006, appearing in 26 games and earning 19 starts, mainly as a central midfielder. Larentowicz scored his first career MLS goal in 2006, the game-winning strike against Columbus on Aug. 27 at Gillette Stadium. The Brown University product also converted the game-winning penalty kick in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup against the Rochester Raging Rhinos. Larentowicz, a senior Developmental player in 2006, is now a member of the Revs' 18-man senior roster.
Penniman, in addition to being a certified athletic trainer, is a registered physical therapist and certified strength and conditioning specialist. He completed work toward his master's degree at Oakland University, where he was the head trainer for the men's soccer and baseball teams during the 2002-03 academic year.
Penniman comes to the Revs from the Bancroft School in Worcester, Mass., where he was the head athletic trainer since 2006, and the Clinton Irish Blizzard of the Eastern Football League, where he has had two stints as the head athletic trainer. Prior to his work at the Bancroft School, Penniman was the Director of Athletic Training Services at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, Mass., a staff physical therapist at South County Physical Therapy, and a senior physical therapist at Spaulding Neighborhood Rehabilitation Center in Wellesley, Mass.
Tomasso, 23, did not see any first-team action in his two seasons with the Revs. He was originally signed a developmental contract with the Revolution on April 21, 2005. Tomasso saw regular time with the New England reserves, both as a goalkeeper and a right fullback. He had a 2.07 goals against average in 10 appearances in net for the Revs as a reserve, and scored one goal in 2006 as a field player. Tomasso elected to not re-sign with New England and is now free to pursue other playing opportunities.
The Revolution kicks off the 2007 season on April 7 against the Chicago Fire in Bridgeview, Ill., before hosting league newcomer Toronto FC - featuring former Revs midfielder José Cancela and former D.C. United forward Alecko Eskandarian - on Saturday, April 14 in the second game of a special doubleheader with the U.S. Women's National Team at Gillette Stadium. Season ticket packages - which include tickets to the Women's National Team match, as well tickets to games at Gillette Stadium as part of the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup - are on sale now.
