
D-Fenders Overpower Vipers 133-121

HIDALGO, Texas, January 7, 2015 - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (7-12) fell 133-121 to the Los Angeles D-Fenders (6-14) tonight at State Farm Arena.
Houston Rockets assignee Nick Johnson led the Vipers with a double-double 24 points and 11 assists. Chris Johnson scored 21 points. Akil Mitchell scored a double-double 15 points and 16 rebounds to tie his previous season-high 16 rebounds recorded on Dec. 12 at Westchester. Clint Capela and Tony Bishop each added 13 points.
Vander Blue led Los Angeles with 38 points, followed by Jabari Brown with 35 points. Roscoe Smith added 31 points.
Jaron Johnson started the game with a shot from behind the arc. Smith responded with a layup to put Los Angeles on the board 3-2. At the 9:10 mark, Nick Johnson connected on a three-pointer to give RGV a 11-4 lead. Blue closed the D-Fenders' deficit to 15-11 with consecutive baskets and a shot at the line. Tyrone White gave RGV its largest lead of the first quarter, 26-15, with 3:51 on the clock. Los Angeles ended the quarter with an 11-2 run to take a 37-36 lead.
Richmond opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to steal a 39-37 advantage. The lead changed eight times throughout the second quarter.At the half, Los Angeles lead 65-61.
Chris Johnson sank a three-pointer and Nick Johnson followed with a layup and a free throw to take a 67-65 lead at the start of the second half. The Vipers held the lead throughout the third quarter. However, the D-Fenders ended the quarter on a 7-3 run to close its deficit to 99-97.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Blue took the 100-99 lead for Los Angeles with a layup and shot at the line. The D-Fenders led through the remainder of the game.
The Vipers are at home for tomorrow to host the Reno Bighorns at 7 p.m. (CT) at State Farm Arena. On Saturday Jan. 10, RGV visits the Texas Legends at 7 p.m. (CT).
