Danville Otterbots News Release

Bristol, VA- Monday night was the second straight night the Danville Braves and Bristol White Sox needed extra innings to decide their contest. On Sunday, the White Sox edged out the Braves 8-7 in 12 innings, but last night, the D-Braves needed one less, 11, to finish off the White Sox. Edison Sanchez's single to score Chase Larsson in the top of the 11th proved to be enough for the D-Braves to improve their record to 22-18.

Bristol got on the board quick and early in Monday night's game. The second batter of the game, Michael Johnson, singled to center. Grant Buckner came up and did the same thing, but Kurt Fleming misplayed the ball in center which allowed Johnson to score and Buckner to take second. Starter, Lucas La Point was able to escape anymore trouble in the first by inducing groundouts from Cory Farris and Bradley Salgado.

Danville, eager to take the lead, came back with two runs in the top of the second. Larsson and Kurt Fleming each singled early on in the inning. Later, Chad Comer walked to load the bases up for Kenny Fleming. Fleming singled to center scoring the runners from second and third. The D-Braves led 2-1 midway through the second inning.

In the fourth, Lucas La Point allowed Bristol to take the lead again. A wild pitch in the inning allowed runners to move up to second and third with one out. The D-Braves allowed the tying run to cross the plate on Michael Marjama's ground out to second base. Then Brent Tanner singled to left; scoring the second run of the inning and giving Bristol a 3-2 lead.

The D-Braves tied the game in the seventh when they took advantage of a Bristol pitching change. Andrew Virgili replaced starter, Darwin Matos. Virgili immediately gave up a single to Elmer Reyes and then Reyes advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Comer. Kenny Fleming blooped a single in behind the shortstop into short left field giving Danville runners at the corners with one out. Fleming was caught stealing second creating the second out. Nick Ahmed hit a ball towards third base that he was able to reach first safely on by an error on Marjama. The error also allowed Reyes to score and the game to be tied at 3-3.

The game remained that way until the top of the 11th when the D-Braves scored their fourth run. Chase Larsson doubled to lead off the inning before Sanchez singled to center scoring Larsson. Sanchez attempted to stretch the single all the way to third while the White Sox attempted to throw out Larsson, but instead Sanchez was caught for the second out of the inning.

John Cornely who had already pitched two innings of relief was able to strike out the side in the bottom of the 11th . He retired seven straight batters to end the game. Cornely earned his second win of the year in his three inning of work. He struck out six and walked just one; not allowing a hit.

Bristol used five pitchers on the night. Matos went six innings giving up two earned runs and striking out two. Virgili earned himself his first blown save of the season. Then Brett Merkley was given the loss after pitching the final two innings and giving up the fourth D-Braves run.

Lucas La Point went five innings for Danville. He allowed three earned runs on six hits and only struck out one batter. Daniel Winnie relieved him and threw three shutout innings while giving up just two hits before giving way to Cornely.

Tomorrow night is the rubber game of the three game series, Danville sends Greg Ross to the mound against Ryan Buch. The D-Braves next home game will be on August 6 when the Bristol White Sox come to town.
