D-Braves Walk off in Two Consecutive Nights

DANVILLE, VA- The D-Braves won their second straight extra inning game, this time it took 11 innings until the outcome was decided, as the Braves win 5-4. Starter Matt Withrow went four innings only allowing two runs on four hits. Reliever Evan Phillips picked up the win, going three shut-out innings only allowing two hits and struck out four to shut down the Pirates in the late innings.

Danville's Leudys Baez launched a lead off solo home run to right field to give the D-Braves an early 1-0 lead. That score would hold true until the third, fourth, and fifth innings when the Bristol Pirates scored a run a piece in the third and fourth and then added a two run Trae Arbet homerun in the fifth inning.

Danville would edge closer in the sixth inning when they narrowed the gap to two. Baez would again lead off, this time beating out an infield single. Outfielder Jose Morel would then single to left field and three Pirates errors would lead to a run for the D-Braves, making the score 4-2 Pirates.

The D-Braves would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning at 4-4. Left fielder Kelvin Estevez would double to right field to put a runner in scoring position for third baseman Yeudi Grullon. Grullon would then triple to center field scoring Estevez and the D-Braves cut into the Pirates lead to make the score 4-3. Leudys Baez would then send a sacrifice fly deep to left field, scoring Grullon to tie the game at 4-4.

The play of the game would come in the top of the tenth inning, Danville Braves second baseman, Luke Dykstra ranged to his left, threw across his body in the air and threw out Pirates designated hitter Jordan George.

In the bottom of the eleventh inning, Braves shortstop Kurt Hoekstra would drive a lead-off single to right field. Catcher Trey Keegan would then sacrifice his at bat and bunt Hoekstra into scoring position. On an 0-2 pitch Braves left fielder Kelvin Estevez would send a walk off single to right field scoring Hoekstra and giving the Braves a 5-4 eleven inning win.

The D-Braves will return to action tomorrow evening at 4 pm. Tomorrow's matchup features a pair of right handers, Luis Gamez for the D-Braves, and Marek Minarik for the Pirates. Sundays' game will be Virginia 529 night at the ballpark. Students enrolled in a Virginia 529 Plan get in Free with a Virginia 529 ID card. It is also Blooper Star Kids Club run the bases night.
