Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (13-11) rallied to overcome a three-run deficit to defeat the Kingsport Mets (12-12) Saturday evening. The Astros are now in sole possession of first place in the Appalachian League West division, moving one game ahead of Kingsport.
Although the Astros did not score their first run of the game until the sixth inning, their offense was productive throughout the night. Eight of the nine Astros starters recorded a hit in the ballgame, and four players had multi-hit nights.
Among the standout offensive performances of the game, those of Hector Roa and Ford Stainback were particularly electrifying. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Roa legged out a triple when he sent a fly ball to deep right field that bounced off the top of the wall and landed back in fair territory. He picked up a RBI in the bottom of the seventh when he singled up the middle to score Stainback from third. Ford had a two-for-four night in which he singled twice, drew a walk, and scored a run. Stainback is now the owner of a .407 season batting average and a seven-game hit streak.
The Mets struck first in the ballgame when they scored a run in the third inning thanks to a couple of singles and an Astros' fielding error. They tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth when Patrick Mazeika sent a line drive double to left field to score Dale Burdick and Arnaldo Berrios.
However, the Astros got back in the game in the sixth when they scored two runs on a Randy Cesar double to centerfield. Justin Garcia had got things started in the inning by lining a double into the gap and was immediately followed with a Hector Roa groundball base hit into left field. Cesar then sent a deep fly ball to the warning track in straight-away centerfield that bounced to the wall and scored both Garcia and Roa, expanding his hit streak to seven games as well.
Greeneville took the lead and ran with it in the bottom of the seventh when they scored four runs thanks to four hits in the inning, bringing the score to 6-3. Myles Straw singled and scored a run; Connor Goedert hit his ninth double of the season and picked up a RBI; Hector Roa singled, knocked in the go-ahead run, and scored; Kevin Martir singled and picked up two RBI.
Salvador Montaño got the start for the Astros and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and striking out two. He was relieved in the fifth by Albert Abreu who went for 3.1 innings and was accredited the win. Abreu struck out three Mets while only allowing two batters to reach base. Cristhopher Santamaria shut the door for Greeneville and received the save as he struck out the last two batters of the game in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Astros will play game two of the three-game series with the Kingsport Mets on Sunday, July 18th. The game will begin at 6:00 PM; gates open at 5:00 PM.
