Danville Otterbots News Release

Greeneville, TN.- The doubleheader tonight between the Danville Braves and Greeneville Astros marks the second doubleheader of the season for the Braves. After being swept in a doubleheader at home last Wednesday against the Princeton Rays the D-Braves were able to split this one with the Astros at Pioneer Park on Wednesday night.

In game one, the D-Braves continued their trend of scoring first in games. In the second inning, William Beckwith singled to center but was able to advance to second on a fielding error by Astros outfielder, Jose Monzon. After taking third on a Brandon Drury groundout, Kyle Kubitza hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that allowed Beckwith to tag up and score. It was Kubitza's eight RBI of the year and first sacrifice fly.

After Greeneville snagged the run back in the third inning to tie the score, Beckwith put the D-Braves back in the lead with a two run homerun. The line drive homer to centerfield scored Nick Ahmed who was on second due to a throwing error by Darwin Rivera.

The D-Braves were leading 3-1 going into the sixth inning. Manager Randy Ingle thought Williams Perez had had enough when he pulled him for JR Graham. Perez went five innings, gave up six hits and just one earned run. He struck three out in his outing. The Astros were able to get to Graham right away. Ariel Ovando lead off the inning with a double, followed by an RBI single by Ernesto Genoves.

With the score 3-2 now and one out, Alex Todd was able to get to second on an error by left fielder Chase Larsson. Jose Vargas tied the game at three a piece on a single to right field and then advanced on yet another error by the D-Braves defense. Garen Wright, who was substituted as a pinch runner for Vargas, took third base on a wild pitch by Graham. Darwin River gave the Astros a 4-3 lead on a single that scored Wright.

Danville fought back in the top half of the seventh in a shortened game because of the Appalachian League doubleheader format. Both games in the doubleheader are just seven innings long. In the top of the seventh, the Braves tied the game at four on a Nick De Santiago single to right field with two outs.

Unfortunately, Greeneville continued to get to Graham in the bottom half of the inning. Ruben Sosa was able to reach on a missed catch error by Beckwith at first base. With a runner on second and two outs, Genoves gave the Astros a walk-off win on a line drive single to right field. The Astros won 5-4. JR Graham suffered his first blown save of the season as well as his first lost. The Astros, Matison Smith, was also give a blown save, but got his first win of 2011.

Game two was scoreless until the third inning when Kenny Fleming got his first hit of the year moving new guy, Chad Comer, to third base. Comer joined the D-Braves for the road trip. Comer is Danville's 29th round selection in the 2011 June draft. Comer scored on a single by Fleming's brother, Kurt, making it 1-0.

William Beckwith led off the fourth inning with his first homerun of the game, but second of the day. It was also Beckwith's team leading fourth homerun of the season. Sam Munson would score later in the inning on a fielding error by Garen Wright in right field. The Braves led 3-0 after three and a half.

Greeneville was able to get one run back in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Danville starter, Daniel Winnie. Winnie gave up a walk and two singles to allow Greeneville to get themselves on the scoreboard and make it a 3-1 game. That would be it for Dan Winnie (2-0) who went five innings, gave up five hits and just one earned run. He struck out two batters and received a win for his efforts.

The Braves added three more runs in the top of the sixth. Following a single by Edison Sanchez, Chase Larsson doubled to score him in a pinch hit at bat. Larsson replaced right fielder Sam Munson. Immediately after Larsson's double, Comer doubled himself, scoring Larsson. Then Kenny Fleming hit a ball to second baseman Josh Magee who threw the ball away allowing Comer to come around from second. The D-Braves had a commanding 6-1 lead.

Another new comer, Mark Lamm, replaced Winnie as the Danville pitcher. Lamm was the Atlanta Braves sixth round draft choice in June out of Vanderbilt University. He struck out the side in order in the sixth inning. Cody Martin replaced Lamm for the seventh frame. He too stuck out the side giving the D-Braves a 6-1 win and allowing them to split the doubleheader in front of 822 people.

The Braves finish off their three game series with Greeneville tomorrow at 7:00 pm before returning home for a three game set with Bluefield on Friday, July 8. The first night of the homestand will be the D-Braves first of two Faith Nights. Scout Night is also scheduled for that Friday. Bobby Cox will make a special appearance at the Braves game on July 9.
