Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, VA - The Danville Braves suffered a big loss in Bristol in their opening game with the Pirates. Danville jumped on the first lead scoring one in the fourth, but the offense was stagnant for the rest of the contest and the Pirates fired back with 11 consecutive, unanswered runs.

Jose Morel scored the only run of the afternoon on his first home run of the season. The outfield smacked a solo shot to right centerfield in the fourth, one of six total hits for the D-Braves on the night. Morel finished 1-3 on the night.

Andry Ubiera has been a force, primarily at the back end of the D-Braves' rotation. Tonight Ubiera got lit up for five runs on eight hits and three walks in 4.0 innings of work for Danville. Before allowing five earned tonight, Ubiera had allowed five runs total in his previous three outings.

Bristol got the offense rolling in the bottom of the fourth, not allowing the Danville lead to hold for long. Trae Arbet tied the game at one in the first at bat of the bottom half of the inning on a solo home run off of Ubiera, his first of the season. It was rough from there on out for Danville, as Ubiera allowed the next two batters to reach on a single and a walk, which allowed Nathan Sopena to single in Jose Salazar for what would be the game winning run to put Bristol up 2-1. Enyel Vallejo followed Sopena up with a bases clearing triple that put Bristol up 4-1 with one out and one on third. The scoring in the fourth concluded with a Jerrick Suiter single that put the Pirates up 5-1, all coming off of Ubiera.

In 2.0 innings of combined work, righties Bradley Roney and Ryan Gunther gave up six total runs in the fifth and sixth. In 1.2 innings, the flame-throwing Roney gave up one run on two hits and a walk, while Gunther threw 0.1 innings in the sixth and gave up five runs on two hits and three walks. Bristol finished the game scoring 11 unanswered runs and took the victory 11-1 over the D-Braves.

Despite the loss, the Danville Braves (36-30) are still in the playoff hunt, just 2.0 games behind Princeton for first place in the East, and 1.0 game behind Pulaski for second place and the last playoff spot in the division. Danville will be back in action tomorrow night against the Bristol Pirates (22-44), with a first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Boyce Cox Field.
