Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (31-32) were defeated, 10-2, by the Bluefield Blue Jays (31-34) in their regular season home finale on Tuesday night at Pioneer Park. The Astros' hopes of returning to the playoffs are now dependant on them sweeping their final road series against the Johnson City Cardinals (35-30) and the Kingsport Mets (33-32) losing one of their final three games against the Elizabethton Twins (36-29).
The Blue Jays jumped on the Astros early and led from start to finish, but the Astros had their chances. Down 1-0 in the first inning, the Astros had the bases loaded with one out before Ydarqui Marte grounded into a double play to end the threat. It was one of four times during the night the Astros would leave a runner stranded at third.
In the second inning, the Blue Jays picked up five hits and three runs to increase their lead to 4-0. However, in the bottom half of the inning, the Astros had runners on second and third when a wild pitch and throwing error by the catcher allowed both runners to score and cut the Blue Jays' lead in half at 4-2.
Three innings later, the Blue Jays built their lead back up to four with a Jesus Gonzalez two-run single. Then, in the eighth, they tacked on four more runs on a Josh Almonte three-run double and a Lane Thomas sacrifice fly.
Even though the Astros' pitchers combined to strike out 14 batters, five different Blue Jays still had two hits apiece as they finished the game with 10 runs on 13 hits with four errors. Meanwhile, the Astros totaled two runs on eight hits and one error.
Blue Jays' reliever Conor Fisk (5-1) picked up the win after allowing just one hit and two walks with four strikeouts over 2.2 scoreless innings.
The Astros will begin their final series of the regular season against the Cardinals in Johnson City on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
