Danville Otterbots News Release

Danville, VA.- Rain delayed the Independence Day game between the Danville Braves and Burlington Royals. The rain also cancelled the fireworks that were to follow the game, so the D-Braves created some of their own. The Danville Braves exploded for 27 runs on 22 hits on Monday night in a game that was delayed by two hours and four minutes. The game lasted one minute short of four hours and ended at 1:09 am.

In the first inning, the Braves got out to a 2-0 lead before the first out was recorded. After and error to start the game and two walks to load the bases, Angel Baez threw a pitch that hit William Beckwith, one run would score. With Brandon Drury batting a wild pitch would score another one. Drury struck out for the first out of the game. Kyle Kubitza got the first of four RBIs for himself on a groundout to short. With Sam Munson batting, the Braves pulled off a double steal, scoring Beckwith from third and putting Larsson on second. The score was 4-0 at the end of one.

After scoring two more in the second frame, including a Kurt Fleming solo homerun, the score was 6-0. Danville added six more in the third. The Royals switched pitchers to start the inning but Jason Mitchell didn't fair any better. With runners at the corners and one out, Elmer Reyes doubled to left field scoring one. Following another walk to load the bases, Nick Ahmed singled up the middle scoring two more making it 9-0. Beckwith was hit by yet another pitch before Brandon Drury had a bases clearing double to make it 12-0 after three.

The fourth inning would mark the only inning in the game that Danville didn't score and the only inning that Burlington did score. Burlington put six on the board in the fourth inning on six hits that all came with two outs. Danville starter, David Filak, had to be replaced by Greg Ross to get the final out the the inning. Filak finished three and two-thirds, giving up ten hits, six earned runs and striking out three. He did not go long enough to earn the win.

The fifth and sixth innings would mark two more innings in which the Braves scored four runs a piece. In the fifth, Sam Munson hit his first home run of the year on a 1-0 pitch. It was a three run blast making the game 16-6. After the four run sixth inning the Braves had a overwhelmed 20-6 lead.

The Braves ended up scoring two more runs in the seventh and ninth inning, and three in the eighth. Nick Ahmed added a long shot of his own, a two run homer in the seventh. Chase Larsson also connected for his first four bagger of the season, a two run shot in the ninth making it 27-6.

Every player in the Danville startling lineup had multiple hits except Nick De Santiago had just one. Kyle Kubitza and Nick Ahmed each had four runs batted in while Beckwith, Drury, Larsson and Munson each had three. The Braves doubled their season homerun total last night, giving them eight now. They also scored as many runs last night as they did during their seven game opening homestand.

Greg Ross pitched three and one-thirds innings. He gave up just two hits and struck out five. He was given the win, it was his second of the season. Jarrett Miller and Joe Lucas each pitched one inning in relief.

The Braves travel to Greeneville now for a three game set before returning home for a three game series with Bluefield on Friday, July 8. The first night of the homestand will be the D-Braves first of two Faith Nights. Scout Night is also scheduled for that Friday. Bobby Cox will make a special appearance at the Braves game on July 9.
