D-Braves Continue to Struggle Coming Back Home
July 12, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, VA - The D-Braves stole two games down in Pulaski to finish off a rough road trip 2-5, and they expected to come back to ALP 325 Field to flip the script; however the Twins of Elizabethton did not get the memo. The Twins held the best record in the Appalachian League coming into the game, and it stayed that way after the Twins downed Danville 7-1 Saturday night.
The Braves knew coming into the contest the Elizabethton's pitching staff was one of the best in the league, and tonight they showed it. Danville managed to score one lone run in the second inning, coming off of a Tanner Murphy sacrifice fly that drove in Justin Black from third after he reached base on a triple the previous at bat. The D-Braves came into the game leading the league in runs scored with 130, but after their performance against Elizabethton have been outscored 41-27 in their last eight games.
Danville's Jordan Edgerton, the Appy League leader in RBI with 25, extended his hitting streak to seven games as it stands. Edgerton reached on a single to center to lead off the fourth inning for the D-Braves, and would finish the game 1-4.
Daniel Cordero got the start for the D-Braves, however his outing would be short lived. Cordero gave up all seven runs to the Twins on eight hits. Cordero has been a solid arm for Danville at this point in the season, however against the best team in the league Cordero struggled and only made it through 2.2 innings giving up one in the second and six in the third.
Elizabethton's shortstop Nick Gordon was a pest all night long for the D-Braves. The Twins 2014 first round pick in the draft showed why the Twins organization thinks so highly of him tonight. The young speedster went 2-5, with a run and RBI. Gordon was also impressive in the field, showing good range and making several laser throws nabbing Braves batters on tight plays at first.
The Danville Braves (13-9) will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against the Elizabethton Twins (15-8) in the second game of a three game set. Max Povse (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 career start) is set to take the mound opposing the Twins' Michael Cederoth (1-0, 3.97 ERA) in a game that can bring Danville within half a game of the best record in the Appy League. Tomorrow's contest is scheduled with a first pitch at 4:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 325 Field in Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
