Perfetto's two goals, Sivak's 20th not enough
Toledo forward Scott Czarnowczan (20) sets up in front of Aces goalie Kevin Carr.
ANCHORAGE, ALASKA - Scott Czarnowczan scored with 1:57 to go in the third period, breaking a 4-4 tie and giving the Toledo Walleye a 5-4 win over the Alaska Aces Sunday at the Sullivan Arena.
The goal overshadowed a two-goal game for Aces forward Stephen Perfetto and Peter Sivak's league-leading 20th goal of the season.
The Walleye scored first at 14:41 of the first period when Tylor Spink intercepted a long break-out pass from the Alaska zone and busted in on the right wing. His wrister beat Aces goaltender Kevin Carr for a short-handed tally.
Alaska tied the game at 1 at the 17:43 mark when Tyler Ruegsegger's dogged work behind the net resulted in a centering pass that Garet Hunt chipped up and over Walleye netminder Jake Paterson for his second goal of the season. Ben Lake also assisted.
In the second period Alaska enjoyed an offensive surge, led by Perfetto. He took a backdoor pass on the left wing from Nolan Descoteaux and blasted home his 11th goalofthe seasonat 1:57. Another helper was credited to Sivak.
Sivak got into the goal scoring action at 3:08, converting a Steve Tarasuk slap-pass, redirecting the puck past Paterson to make it 3-1 Alaska. Ryan Trenz also assisted on the power play goal.
Perfetto found the back of the net again at 4:53, from Sivak, and suddenly the Aces had a 4-1 lead.
Toledo would chip away at that lead with goals by Evan Rankin at 10:33 and Jacob MacDonald at 13:15 on the power play, and the second period ended 4-3 Alaska.
In the third period, Carter Sandlak tied the game at 4 for Toledo at 5:30, setting up Czarnowczan's heroics at 18:03.
The Aces had one last shot at 19:59, but a Trenz point-blank one-timer was kicked out by Paterson to preserve the victory.
Toledo outshot the Aces 34-22 for the game, holding the Aces to just 3 shots on goal in the third period.
Alaska now travels to Tulsa to take on the Oilers at 4:05pm AST Wednesday.
