Cyclones to Become the Brooklyn Jefes, August 8-10
March 20, 2018 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - Minor League Baseball today announced that the Brooklyn Cyclones will become the Brooklyn Jefes from August 8-10 as part of MiLB's "Copa de la Diversion." The Copa is a season-long event series across MiLB, with teams in 19 states participating, specifically designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most in Hispanic / Latino communities.
The name Jefes, or bosses, was chosen as a nod to the air of confidence that is synonymous with the people of Brooklyn. Brooklyn is the best, we all know it. But if you don't know it, just ask someone from Brooklyn and they'll tell you. This "Brooklyn-tough" mentality is associated with the borough of Brooklyn as frequently as the Brooklyn Bridge or a fresh slice of pizza, so it was the perfect choice for the Cyclones alter-ego.
"In our discussions about what our name should be, Jefes was the overwhelming winner," said Cyclones General Manager Kevin Mahoney. "Brooklyn is more than a place, it's a state of mind. It's the mentality that you're in charge, you're the boss, because you're from Brooklyn."
In addition, the team has announced that MetroPlus Health Plans will be the presenting sponsor of the "Copa de la Diversion" at MCU Park. MetroPlus will have a presence at all three games, and will be partnering with the Cyclones for numerous events in the Hispanic community leading up to the three-game Jefes takeover.
As part of the three-game Jefes series, the Cyclones will also be raising funds for hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. As part of the game on Friday, August 10th fans will be able to purchase a special tree-frog bobblehead package for $30 with proceeds to benefit The Hispanic Federation and their Puerto Rico Disaster Relief Fund.
On Wednesday, August 8th the Cyclones will kick off the three-day celebration with Mexican Cultural Night. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Jefes Sugar Skull bobblehead courtesy of MetroPlus. In addition, there will be Mexican music, art, food and dance performers throughout the evening as part of a Dia de Los Muertos-inspired celebration at the ballpark.
On Thursday, August 9th the team will celebrate Dominican Cultural Night and the first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive an Amed Rosario bobblehead. The evening will also feature Merengue music, carnaval costumed performers and local celebrities from the Dominican community.
