Cyclones planning longest first pitch ever

June 9, 2006 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

On June 20th, prior to the 2006 Home Opener, the Cyclones will be conducting the longest "first pitch" in history!

Beginning at 2:15pm at Brooklyn's Borough Hall, a giant 30 inch baseball will be carried by dozens of Cyclones fans for the longest first pitch ever. The ball will travel 24 miles through 247 traffic lights, 15 left turns, and 10 right turns throughout Brooklyn, from Borough Hall to KeySpan Park for the 7:00 PM game vs. the Staten Island Yankees.

The Opening Day festivities and pitch relay will kick off at 2:15 PM at Brooklyn Borough Hall with a performance by East New York's Approaching Storm Marching Band, a southern-style marching band of children ages 10 to 19. Irish Step Dancers from Marine Park's O'Malley Irish Dance School will then perform. Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will be joined by Council Member Dominic Recchia, KeySpan Chairman & CEO Robert Catell, and world-famous 3-D artist Charles Fazzino, who will unveil his new Brooklyn Cyclones artwork. Fans are encouraged to join the group sing-along of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" on the steps of borough hall. To start the longest pitch, Marty Markowitz will pass the ball to Bob Catell. A motorcade of police vans, Secret Service personnel, an antique fire truck, and a 1959 convertible will then take the game ball throughout Brooklyn to KeySpan Park in time for the 7:00 PM game. The parade will make stops at several neighborhood businesses, Grand Army Plaza, and Greenwood Cemetery before arriving at the legendary Astroland Park where the game ball will ride the Cyclone roller coaster and Deno's Wonder Wheel. The baseball will then be brought into the stadium to start the game.

Fans can be a part of the Opening Day festivities by signing up to pass the game ball along on its route to KeySpan Park. For more information on the Cyclones Opening Day festivities, please call Robert Field at the Brooklyn Cyclones at (718) 449-8497.
