Cyclones Drop Double Overtime Thriller

Cincinnati, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones fell to the Ft. Wayne Komets, 3-2 in double overtime, on Friday night. Forwards Jack Downing and Christiaan Minella scored the goals for Cincinnati, who are now tied in their best-of-seven Western Conference Quarterfinal series with Ft. Wayne, 2-2.

The Cyclones opened up the scoring early in the first period as 3:45 in, forward Andrew Yogan sent a pass to Downing in the slot, and he ripped a slapshot past Komet netminder Pat Nagle to put Cincinnati ahead, 1-0.

That 1-0 lead held up throughout the reminder of the first, and with less than two minutes remaining in the second, Cincinnati extended their lead to 2-0 when forward Levko Koper came down the left wing on a 2-on-1 rush and sent a cross-ice feed to Minella who tipped it past Nagle to give the Cyclones a 2-0 advantage.

Ft. Wayne answered with seven seconds left in the frame when forward Troy Bourke scored on the power play to cut Cincinnati's lead to 2-1 after 40 minutes.

The Komet power play struck again roughly seven minutes into the third when Bourke found the back of the net for the second time on the evening, tying the game, 2-2.

Ft. Wayne's offense continued to get quality chances in the third, outshooting the Cyclones 15-1 in the frame. Cyclones netminder Brad Thiessen was charged with making numerous big saves, and preserved the 2-2 tie through the end of regulation.

In the first overtime, Cincinnati picked up the offense, and had a number of scoring chances, however they could not find the back of the net, and the sides headed to a second overtime still tied, 2-2.

With 4:40 remaining in the second extra session, Komets forward Alex Belzile wristed a shot past Thiessen to secure the 3-2, double overtime win.

The Cyclones were outshot, 56-31 on the night, with Thiessen stopping 53 in the loss. Cincinnati wraps up the home portion of their first round schedule on Saturday night with Game 5. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:35pm ET.
