Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, ID - Joe Basaraba's goal just 1:11 into the third period broke a 1-1 tie and held up as the game winner, as the Idaho Steelheads skated to a 3-1 win over the Allen Americans at CenturyLink Arena in Game 4 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. The win for the Steelheads ties the best-of-seven series 2-2 with one more game to be played in Boise on Saturday night before the series shifts back to Texas.
All four games of the series have been decided by a 3-1 score, with the team scoring the first goal winning each contest. That first goal came early in the second period, with the Steelheads killing a penalty.
Just 40 seconds into the middle frame, with Tommy Fallen off for tripping, the Americans won the offensive zone face-off but the puck bounced out to the neutral zone. With a full head of steam, Andrew Carroll outraced Matt Register to the puck and drove down the left wing on Americans goaltender Riley Gill. Gill made the initial save on Carroll with his left pad, but kicked out a rebound to the front for Kyle Jean to slam into an open cage for a shorthanded goal and his first of the playoffs at 50 seconds of the second period.
The Steelheads had four shorthanded goals during the regular season, the last also coming from Jean on March 18th against Rapid City. Tonight was Idaho's first shorthanded goal in the playoffs since David de Kastrozza's tally on May 2, 2014 against Alaska.
In the first three games of the series, the team that scored first went on to take a two-goal lead. In Game 4, however, the Americans did tie the game late in the second period when former-Steelhead Tristan King deflected a Vincent Arseneau pass over the shoulder of Philippe Desrosiers at 16:53 of the middle period to send the teams to the locker room tied 1-1.
Basaraba changed that on the second shift of the third period, carrying a puck into the Allen zone with speed down the left wing and rifling a wrist shot through defenseman Dave Makowski and past Gill for his second goal of the post-season.
Jean added an empty-net goal with 1:25 to go to ice the win for the Steelheads.
After giving up two power play goals in each of the past two games, the Steelheads penalty kill was dominant in killing off all four Allen man-advantages, in addition to the Jean goal. Desrosiers made 29 saves in a winning effort, with the Steelheads surrendering just six shots to the Americans in the third period.
Carson McMillan registered two assists for the Steelheads, giving him four assists in four games in the series. Chad Costello picked up an assist on King's goal, giving him six helpers in the playoffs.
With the series tied 2-2, the teams will meet for Game 5 at CenturyLink Arena on Saturday night,, with puck-drop scheduled for 7:10pm MT. The series will then move back to Allen next week for Game 6 and, if necessary, Game 7. Game 5 is available on 1350AM KTIK, ECHLTV, and Cable One.
