Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

WINNING WAYS: The Cyclones are off to a fast start under manager Wally Backman, going 4-1 through the team's first five games. Brooklyn has primarily relied on strong pitching, solid defense, and a knack for "small ball." Backman has called for two successful suicide squeeze plays, and another safety squeeze which have all led to Brooklyn runs.

CF Darrell Ceciliani (who turned just 20 years old yesterday) has been in the middle of virtually every run for Brooklyn, and is leading the team in average among qualifiers, at .304 (7-for-23), with six runs scored (2nd-best in the league) and five RBI.

Ceciliani has drawn the praise of another number-two-hitting Oregon native -- manager Wally Backman. "Ceciliani is still just a baby, but he's one of the players we're counting on to set the tone for our team and make things happen. He is learning how to hit second -- how to take pitches, when to bunt, when to steal bases...all the little things. He's fast, he makes good contact, he's got some pop, and he plays good defense. He's a prospect."

RF Cory Vaughn has also played well in his professional debut. The Mets' 4th round pick -- and son of former MLB slugger Greg Vaughn -- hit his first home run as a pro on Monday night, belting the first pitch he saw to the opposite field and clearing the right field wall.
