Lake Monsters Open Road Trip with 2-1 Extra-Inning Win at Tri-City

BURLINGTON, VT --- Pinch hitter Justin Miller's RBI single in the top of the 11th inning gave the Vermont Lake Monsters their fourth straight win with a 2-1 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Bruno Stadium.

The Lake Monsters trailed 1-0 when they scored an unearned run without the benefit of a hit in the eighth inning to tie the game on a hit batter, fielding error and back-to-back walks. Vermont had a chance to score in the 10th on a Blake Kelso single, but Rick Hughes was gunned down at the plate.

Henndry Jimenez led off the 11th with a groundball single to right, moved to second on a sac bunt and third on a wild pitch with one out. After a Ronnie LaBrie struckout for the second out, Miller pinch hit for Hughes and singled into leftfield to plate Jimenez with the go ahead run.

Wilson Eusebio, who had come into the game in the bottom of the ninth with two runners on and one out, tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief with three walks and three strikeouts for the victory. Shane McCatty, who allowed six runs in 3 1/3 innings in a loss last Saturday, retired all eight batters with three strikeouts that he faced on Wednesday. With just one run allowed in 11 innings, Vermont pitched lowered their league-leading team to 1.61 for the season.

Tri-City took a 1-0 lead on four straight singles off Vermont starter Taylor Jordan in the fourth inning. Those four singles were the only hits allowed by Jordan in his five innings with no walks and four strikeouts. The game was then delayed for just over an hour in the bottom of the sixth inning due to a power outage at the ballpark.

Chad Mozingo was 2-for-3 for the Lake Monsters, which outhit the ValleyCats 8-5 for the game. Daniel Adamson was 2-for-5 for Tri-City (2-4), while Brendan Stines (0-1) allowed the 11th inning run to take the loss. Starter Carlos Quevedo had tossed six scoreless innings on three hits with three strikeouts.

Vermont (5-1), which is the first New York-Penn League team to reach five wins on the young season, are at Tri-City again on Thursday night with Chad Jenkins scheduled to start for the Lake Monsters.
