Denver Cutthroats News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Gabe Gauthier and A.J. Gale both scored but the Denver Cutthroats came up short in a 6-4 loss to the Arizona Sundogs on Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center in front of an announced crowd of 2,880.

Down 3-0, Gauthier and Gale's goals cut Denver's deficit to one in the third period, but Arizona scored three more times in the final frame to pull away from the Fish. Gauthier's goal was his fourth of the season after he scored twice on Friday, while Gale's was his team leading seventh. Both also added an assist in the contest.

Kyle Quincey and J.P. Chabot also scored for Denver late in the third period. Quincey's goal came on a slap shot off a Cutthroats faceoff win at 13:05 while Chabot scored with 18 seconds left in regulation.

Both teams combined for 80 shots on goal with Denver leading 43-37. Goaltender Kent Patterson made 31 saves for the Cutthroats while his counterpart for the Sundogs, Adam Russo, stopped 39 pucks.

The first period saw Denver outshoot Arizona 19-15, but it was the Sundogs that were able to find the back of the net as Kyle Schussler scored with 5:36 remaining in the stanza after his centering pass deflected off a skate in front.

Arizona (6-2-2) held the lead going into the second period and added two more goals in a matter of 35 seconds to take a 3-0 advantage. Mikael Bedard scored at 9:44 and Kyle Chipchura scored at 10:19 of the middle period for Arizona.

Gauthier was finally able to get the Cutthroats on the scoreboard at 12:50 of the second on a hardworking goal down low. Off a shot by Brett Lutes, Gauthier was at the edge of the crease whacking away at the rebound and on the third try he was finally able to get enough of the puck to put it in the net.

In the third period, Denver's Joel Chouinard broke up an Arizona 2-on-1 rush and was able to move the puck up to Gale, who went the length of the ice and scored on a breakaway just 1:26 into the period.

However the Cutthroats' 3-2 deficit would be as close as they would come to a comeback as Arizona's Derek LeBlanc, Chipchura and Johan Ryd scored for the Sundogs in the third period.

The Cutthroats (3-6-0) now return home where they will host the Arizona Sundogs on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at the Denver Coliseum. The two teams will meet again on Friday night before Denver hosts the Fort Worth Brahmas on Saturday.

Three Stars:

1. Kyle Chipchura (ARZ)

2. Derek LeBlanc (ARZ)

3. Gabe Gauthier (DEN)
