PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Troy Schwab's third period goal turned a tie hockey game into a 3-2 win for the Denver Cutthroats over the Arizona Sundogs on Tuesday night at Tim's Toyota Center in front an announced crowd of 1,847.
Schwab's goal came just over a minute after Cody Purvis tied the game at 2-2 for Arizona off a centering pass from behind the net with 7:07 left to play. Purvis also assisted on Arizona's first goal from Adam Smyth at 6:59 of period three.
Brad Smyth finished the night with a pair of assists for the Cutthroats (11-8-1) to extend his team-high point streak to seven games. It was the first time in six meetings between Denver and Arizona (9-9-3) that the road team won a game.
AJ Gale opened up the game's scoring 5:32 into period one after driving the net through the left circle. The goal was Gale's team-leading 12th of the season and the forward took over the CHL scoring lead with his 28th point of the season. Luke Fulghum then tallied his 400th career point by burying his own rebound driving down the slot with 5:30 left in the frame for his sixth of the season.
Kent Patterson won his sixth game of the season and his third straight with 19 saves on the night. David Brown took the loss for Arizona with 19 saves as well.
Neither team scored on the power play as the Cutthroats finished 0-for-1 and Arizona went 0-for-2.
The Cutthroats now travel to Texas where they will continue their three-game road trip on Friday against the first place Allen Americans. Friday's contest is set for a 6:05 PM MST start.
