New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters rode a strong pitching performance from Jarrett Stawarz and a pair of big hits from Junior Zamora all the way to a 5-2 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes Sunday afternoon at Yale Field.
In his second game back from a stint on the disabled list, Zamora reminded everyone just what he can do at the plate, ripping a run-scoring double in his first at bat that was about a foot short of being a home run. In his next at bat, he led off the bottom of the fourth with a towering fly ball that cleared the right-center field wall for his second homer in a Cutters uniform.
Stawarz (9-7) was solid on the mound for the Cutters, save for one bump in the road in the top of the third when he surrendered back to back round-trippers to Andy Brown and Zach Strong. It was Strong's second dinger an as many days and his eighth on the season. Brown's blast was his team-leading 21st.
The Tornadoes would not get to Stawarz for the rest of the day. He pitched six innings, scattering eight hits, walking three and fanning four. Willy Espinal pitched three innings of scoreless relief for his third save of the season.
Eddie Pena (2-4) picked up the loss for Worcester in his first start this year. He, along with other relievers Chris Shank and Steve Palazzolo were given a chance to toss some innings in preparation for the playoffs. Pena pitched three innings and was touched up for three earned runs on five hits.
Bill Peavey drove in his 71st run of the year on a 3 for 4 day at the plate.
The final game of the regular season is on Monday at 2:05 at Yale Field. As these two teams set up their pitching rotations for their upcoming playoff series starting on Wednesday, expect to see multiple pitchers used in the game. The Tornadoes will start with Derell McCall (6-7). The Cutters starter has yet to be determined.
