NEW HAVEN 5, WORCESTER 2 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 2:50 ATT: 1335 W: Jarrett Stawarz (9-7) L: Eduardo Pena (2-4) S: Willie Espinal (3) HR: WOR - Andy Brown (21), Zach Strong (8), NHC - Junior Zamora (2) New Haven starter Jarrett Stawarz wins his ninth of the season going six innings, allowing eight hits and two runs, while striking out four. Reliever Willie Espinal picked up his third save of the season for the Cutters. Tornadoes starter Eduardo Pena got the loss, going three innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out two. Worcester DH Andy Brown went 2-for-5 at the plate, with an RBI, blasting his twenty-first homer of the season. New Haven DH Junior Zamora also blasted a home run, going 2-for-4 at the plate, driving in two and scoring two. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- QUEBEC 6, ELMIRA 4 @ Quebec City, Quebec. Time: 2:27 ATT: 3,559 W: Eric Wikstrom (1-1) L: Mike Howell (6-10) S: Cristian Mendoza (21) HR: QBC - Eddie Lantigua (29) Quebec scored three in the fourth to take a lead they would not relinquish, ensuring a series victory against Elmira to close out the regular season. The Pioneers got on the board first with a quick run in the top of the first but they couldn't keep up with the Capitales' bats. Quebec tacked on to their 3-1 lead with a run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and while Elmira kept pace, they couldn't quite overcome the Quebec bullpen. CF Jason Tuttle and LF Jabe Bergeron both had three hits and drove in a run for the Pioneers and 3B Onix Mercado was 2-for-4 with an RBI. SS T.J. Shimizu drove in a pair for Quebec and 3B Eddie Lantigua hit his 29th homer of the season. Eric Wikstrom got the win, giving up three runs on eight hits and striking out seven in seven innings and closer Cristian Mendoza gave up two hits in the ninth but escaped unscathed to record his 21st save. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- GRAYS 11, NORTH SHORE 4 @ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:29 ATT: 2375 W: Lincoln Mincks (10-7) L: Jose Brazoban (0-1) S: None HR: GRY - Mark Burke 2(10) In their final game of the season, the Grays were able to belt out fifteen hits to defeat the Spirit 11-4. Grays starter Lincoln Mincks won his tenth game of the season, going eight innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out six. North Shore starter Jose Brazoban got the loss, going two innings, allowing eight hits and six runs. Third baseman Andy Howdeshell went 1-for-1 with two RBIs for the Spirit. Grays first baseman Mark Burke went 2-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs, blasting two homers, his ninth and tenth of the season. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW JERSEY 7, BROCKTON 2 @ Brockton, Mass. Time: 2:57 ATT: 3,523 W: Marty Janzen (2-1) L: Kevin Beavers (5-6) S: None HR: BRK - Andrew Salvo (3) New Jersey started off the scoring in the top of the first on an RBI-single by DH Elvis Corporan and starter Marty Janzen held the Rox to two runs on three hits through six innings. Brockton took a brief lead in the bottom of the first when RF Matt Cucurullo led off with a single and 2B Andrew Salvo followed him up with a home run to right, but Janzen gave up just one hit over the next five innings and the Jackals scored five in the third to break the game open. 1B Francisco Lebron doubled home the first two runs and RF Steven Checksfield's subsequent double plated another run. A groundout by C Matt Hagen scored Lebron and LF Horace Lawrence's single brought in Checksfield to cap the inning's scoring. Randy Rapp came on relief of Janzen in the seventh and held Brockton scoreless for two innings, striking out four, and Fabricio Benitez closed out the game with a perfect ninth. New Jersey tacked on a final run in the eighth inning on CF Zach Smithlin's RBI single.
