New Haven County Cutters News Release
It was another case of too little, too late for the New Haven County Cutters on Thursday night, as they were bested by the Worcester Tornadoes 12-10 in a game that was delayed for more than an hour due to rain.
If the long delay had any effect on the Cutters, it didn't show in the first inning as starting pitcher Courtney Hall mowed down the top of the Tornadoes lineup one-two-three. Things started positively for New Haven County at the plate, too. Keto Anderson led off the bottom of the first with a double, followed by a Darren Ciraco single. Slugging first baseman Bill Peavey showed only a glimpse of what was to come when he pounded a run scoring double and staked the team to a 1-0 lead. The lead was increased by one when Andy Larned grounded out to second. With the infield playing back, Ciraco scored easily.
The lead would not last long. The Tornadoes scored six runs in the top of the second, all of which were unearned. Errors would prove costly for the Cutters all night, as the team allowed seven unearned runs.
Peavey began the surge to bring the Cutters back from a 10-2 deficit. In the bottom of the fifth, he launched a mammoth two-run home run that easily cleared the right field fence. It was the first home run hit by a Cutters player at Yale Field since opening night.
The Cutters cut the lead to three when they scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was stretched to five in the top of the eighth when a pair of Worcester hits and sloppy defense hurt the Cutters once again.
A ninth inning rally brought the winning run to the plate in the form of Orlando Encarnacion, who had reached base via hits in three of his four at bates, but he was unable to extend the game, failing to connect with a David Byard pitch.
Both teams showed potent offensives with Worcester registering 10 hits and the Cutters slugging 15 base knocks. Peavey and Anderson, along with Encarnacion, each had three hits.
The Cutters begin a three-game series with the Brockton Rox on Friday. Ryan Bonesio of the Cutters and Marcos Castillo of the Rox will be the starting pitchers.
