CAN-AM League Recap 6/16/05
June 16, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
NORTH SHORE AT QUEBEC (doubleheader) Rained out, doubleheaders July 1 and 2 at North Shore
BROCKTON 5, GRAYS 3 @ Brockton, Mass. Time: 2:45 ATT: 3,904 W: Kevin Beavers (1-0) L: Brad Esarey (1-1) S: Tony Stutz (2)HR: None
The Grays rallied for three in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome Brockton's 5-0 lead, as the Rox finished a four-game sweep of the league's road team. Rox starter Kevin Beavers went six and a third innings, allowing three hits and no runs and striking out six for the win. Brad Esarey took the loss for the Grays, surrendering three runs on five hits in his 6.1 innings. The big blow for Brockton came in the seventh when, up 2-0, C Brian Jones singled up the middle to score two with two outs, putting the game effectively out of reach late. The Rox tacked on another run in the eighth on 2B Hector Henriquez' sacrifice fly. The insurance turned out to give Brockton some breathing room when the Grays scored three unearned on RBI singles by C Brad Hargreaves and CF Greg Strickland sandwiched around a sacrifice fly by 2B Jason Sartari, but closer Tony Stutz induced the potential tying run to ground out to end the game.
NEW JERSEY 6, ELMIRA 0 @ Elmira, NY. Time: 2:10 ATT: 1,197 W: Aaron Myers (3-2) L: Mike Howell (2-1) S: None HR: NJ - Rich Gomez (4)
The Jackals offense backed up a brilliant performance by P Aaron Myers, scoring three in the first on two-out hits by 1B John Lindsey, DH Joe Jiannetti and LF Rich Gomez to start a brief affair that lasted just over two hours. Myers did the rest, tossing nine innings of shutout baseball and allowing just three hits while striking out 10. While Myers was plowing through the Elmira order, New Jersey struck again in the second on an RBI single by SS Ricardo Cordova and put up two in the third thanks to a home run by Gomez. Six runs were more than enough for Myers, who matched four scoreless innings of relief by Elmira's Buddy Bengel and Jared Stuart to finish the game. Only 3B Derek Barrows seemed to have Myers' number, going 2-for-4 with a double, but he was stranded both times aboard.
