Cutters sweep Pioneers in doubleheader and series

July 7, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters won their fourth and fifth games in a row on Thursday night, as they toppled the Elmira Pioneers 3-1 and 5-4 in dual seven-inning contests to sweep the doubleheader and the three-game series. The story of game one was Cutters' starter Jarrett Stawarz. In just his second start of the season, he allowed only one unearned run to the Pioneers. Derrick Gibson provided all the offense New Haven County would need, belting his seventh home run of the season in the first inning. He is tied with Bill Peavey for the team lead. Stawarz was on complete control throughout the game. He struck out seven Elmira batters, walking three and hitting one but showed a gritty determination to get through tough stretches when his control momentarily left him. Game two looked like it might get away from the Cutters. With the score tied at two in the fourth inning, Jeff Brooks launched his fourth home run of the season, a no-doubt solo shot that easily cleared the trees lining the backside of the left field fence. But New Haven County lost their 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth when Ryan Kenning and Ransel Melgarejo led off the Elmira half with back to back singles. They were chased home on Das Jesson's double. Suddenly, the Cutters were down by one with only two at bats remaining. As they have shown an aptitude to do recently, the Cutters rallied late. Keto Anderson led off the team's final frame with a single up the middle and reached second on a wild pitch from Claudio Galva. Gibson continued to produce for New Haven County, driving in the tying run with a lined single in left center. Peavey followed with another single, pushing the winning run into scoring position. In his first game back from a finger injury, Brooks delivered in the clutch. Not with a monstrous home run or a laced ball into the gap, but with a little flare over the first baseman Kenning's head, which brought home the winning run in the form of Gibson. The Cutters will welcome the New Jersey Jackals to Yale Field for the first time this season, starting a three-game series on Friday night at 7:05, riding a wave of momentum from Thursday?s doubleheader sweep and five consecutive victories.
