Can-Am League recap 7-7-05
July 7, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
NORTH SHORE 2, NEW JERSEY 1 Gm 1 @ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:03 W: Alexander Herrera (3-0) L: Isaac Pavlik (2-2) S: None HR: NSR - Marcos Agramonte (1)
North Shore 2B Marcos Agramonte scored twice tonight - once in the third inning on a sequence of errors, wild pitches, and a Vic Davilla sac RBI, the other in the bottom of the seventh, as he jacked his first home run of the year - a walk-off solo shot, giving the Spirit a little extra boost to carry into the second game of their doubleheader with New Jersey. Making it all possible for Agramonte's heroics was P Alexander Herrera, who went seven full innings for the win, giving up just one run while striking out an astronomical eleven in the abbreviated contest.
NORTH SHORE 1, NEW JERSEY 0 Gm 2 @ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:10 ATT: 1,855 W: Bryan Morse (5-1) L: Josh Brey (4-2) S: None HR: None
North Shore proved for the second time tonight the adage that Pitching wins ballgames, as starting P Bryan Morse went the full seven innings for the Spirit, tossing a three-hit gem of a shutout against the reeling Jackals, whose offense seemed utterly mystified by the North Shore pitching all day. For the second game in a row, the Spirit squeaked by the Jackals, this time 3B Eric Storey drove home the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh as North Shore walked off winners again, creeping up to within two games of first-place Quebec.
NEW HAVEN 3, ELMIRA 1 Gm 1 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 1:49 ATT: 1,674 W: Jarrett Stawartz (3-4) L: Michael Howell (3-4) S: Andy Weimar (2) HR: NHC - Derrick Gibson (7)
New Haven exploded in the first inning, giving themselves a three-run cushion to rest on for the final six innings, as they beat Elmira 3-1 in the first game of tonight's twin bill. RF Derrick Gibson fueled most of the offensive fireworks for the Cutters, ripping a hard liner over the left field wall for a two-run home run in the first. With a three-run lead, P Jarrett Stawartz brought his nastiest stuff of the season, befuddling the Pioneers' bats through six innings of work, giving up just one hit and striking out seven.
NEW HAVEN 5, ELMIRA 4 Gm 2 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 2:30 ATT: 1,674 W: Mark Comelli (1-0) L: Claudio Galva (0-2) S: None HR: NHC - Jeff Brooks (4)
New Haven won for the fifth straight game, behind solid pitching and outstanding offensive showings from CF Keto Anderson, RF Derrick Gibson, and DH Jeff Brooks. The trio combined for 7-11 hitting, with four runs scored and four RBI, as well as triple-handedly putting together the Cutter's two-run, bottom of the seventh comeback. Anderson scored the tying run on a Gibson RBI single, and Gibson scored the game winning run on a Brooks RBI single. The game had been back-and-forth all night, with more lead changes than the Tour de France. But ultimately it was the triumvirate from New Haven sealing the victory in the seventh in dramatic fashion as the Cutters continue their push to climb the standings.
BROCKTON 4, QUEBEC 2 @ Quebec City, Que. Time: 2:58 ATT: 3,708 W: Jon Koch (3-2) L: Julien Tucker (3-2) S: Joey Cole (5) HR: BRO - Kris Zacuto (4) QUE - Buck McNabb (2)
The only two teams to play a full nine innings tonight, Quebec used the final two innings to stage a comeback while Brockton used the eighth and ninth innings to put the game away. LF Buck McNabb went yard in the ninth, as Quebec pulled within two runs of the Rox, but couldn't put up enough to close the gap, as Brockton held onto a 4-2 lead they put up throughout the game. In addition to being the only 9-inning game of the night, the Rox used an RBI single from Relief Pitcher Eddie Aucoin, as well as a two-run home run from DH/C Kris Zacuto, who finished the game 2-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored.
GRAYS 3, WORCESTER 1 Gm 1 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 1:53 W: Vinny DeChristofaro (1-4) L: Alex Pena (3-2) S: Randy Rapp (7) HR: WOR - Omar Pena (8)
SS Omar Pena put the Tornadoes up 1-0 in the first inning with a solo home run, but was shut down, along with the rest of the Tornadoes, by starting P Vinny DeChristofaro of the Grays, who allowed just five hits in his first win of the year, as they attempt to keep pace with red-hot North Shore in the first-half standings hunt. The Grays got unusual performance out of the tail end of their lineup, as the 7-8-9 hitters combined to drive in all three runs for the team.
WORCESTER 3, GRAYS 2 Gm 2 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 2:06 ATT: 1,980 W: Derell McCall (2-2) L: Roberto Nieves (2-3) Save: Dave Byard (8) HR: None
The Grays fell just shy of winning four straight games - two back-to-back doubleheaders - against Worcester, but went down fighting furiously in a 3-2 loss. The Tornadoes built an early 3-0 lead over the Grays, due largely to the masterful pitching of Derell McCall, who was sneakily effective, giving up just two hits, but getting just one strikeout in six innings of shutout ball. After leaving with the win seemingly in the bag, he would have to sit back and watch as the Grays staged a furious comeback but fell just shy of being the fourth team to win in walk-off fashion.
Tomorrow's Schedule (All times Eastern):
Grays (Lincoln Minks, 4-1) at Quebec (Rick Kirsten, 1-3), 7:05
Worcester (Junior Guerrero, 2-1) at Elmira (TBA), 7:05
