New Haven County Cutters News Release
(West Haven, CTâ June 2, 2004) Jose Mateo scored on Aces' pitcher Buzzy Francis' throwing error in the tenth as the Cutters remained undefeated with a 3-2 victory over the Aces in front of 813 on School Field Trip Day at Yale Field.
Mateo led off the tenth with an infield single that deflected off the right hand of Aces reliever Nick Maness. Maness stayed on, but threw a wild pitch on his first offering to Tyrone Pendergrass moving Mateo to second. Maness was then quickly removed in favor of right-hander Buzzy Francis. Francis fielded a Pendergrass bunt and threw to third to get the lead runner, but his low throw skipped away from third basemen Andres Silvera allowing the winning run to score.
The Aces broke a scoreless tie in the fifth on catcher Coby Perez's double scoring Dalmiro Quezada. In the top of the sixth, Greg Schmidt's RBI single extended the Aces lead to 2-0. While the Aces added to their lead in the sixth, the Cutters lost a player. Earlier in the inning, New Haven third basemen Gavin Fingleson injured his left shoulder diving for a ball in foul territory. Fingleson's status will be evaluated tomorrow morning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Fingleson's replacement Carlos Dominguez led things off with a base-hit. He later scored on a Hector Lebron sac-fly cutting the Aces lead to 2-1. That same formula worked again in the eighth as Dominguez once again led off with a single. A Nick Devenny wild pitch moved him to second and a Billy Rich sac-bunt pushed him to third. Then facing lefty Amaury Sanchez, Hector Lebron lifted another sac-fly to left scoring Dominguez and tying the game at two.
Tim Keinath (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the win. Nick Maness (0-1) takes the loss. Cutters starter Tony Harden threw 6 solid innings allowing two runs on five hits. Aces starter Marc Cerbone went 5 2/3 innings surrendering one run on four hits.
The New Haven County Cutters play their home games in Elm City's historic Yale Field. The club plays a 92-game schedule in the eight-team independent Northeast League. Season tickets, 10-game and 20-game mini-plans are available by contacting the Cutters front office at (203) 777-5636.
