Cutters struggle at the plate, drop final game of series

New Haven County Cutters News Release
The offensive woes of the New Haven County Cutters continued for a second game in a row, as they could manage only three hits in a 9-0 rubber match loss to the North Shore Spirit on a warm Sunday afternoon.
For the entire three-game series, the Spirit's starting pitching proved to be too much for the Cutters to handle. The trio of Ryan Bicondoa, Jake Mullis and Sunday's starter Alex Herrera combined to throw 25 innings and allowed only two earned runs. Herrera's start might have been the pick of the bunch, as he was virtually unhitable in his eight innings of work. Only the Cutters Derrick Gibson (2 for 4) and Mike O'Keefe (1 for 3) managed hits against Herrera.
In addition to stellar pitching, the Spirit showed an aptitude for making spectacular plays in the field. Shortstop Yuri Sanchez led by example, making a number of jaw-dropping web gems.
Herrera came out of top of Cutters' starter Rolando Valles in a Venezuelan southpaw pitching match up. Valles was solid, but would have had to be perfect to beat Herrera on this day.
Spirit first baseman Vic Davilla hit his second home run of the series and rightfielder Brian Macchi added another four bagger.
The Cutters will travel to Elmira on Tuesday to take on the Pioneers in a three-game series, followed by a four-game set against the class of the Can-Am League, the Worcester Tornadoes. The team comes back to Yale Field on Tuesday, July 5 to start a return series against Elmira.
