Published on June 26, 2005 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
NORTH SHORE 9, NEW HAVEN 0 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 2:50 ATT: 1,211 W: Alexander Herrera (1-0) L: Rolando Valles (2-3) S: None HR: SH - Vic Davilla (6), Brian Macchi (2)
North Shore starter Alexander Herrera shut out the Cutters over eight innings, allowing just three hits, and his offense backed him up with nine runs as the Spirit beat New Haven for the second consecutive game to take the series. RF Brian Macchi was 3-for-6, including a two-run homer in the eighth and 1B Vic Davilla drove in two in the third with a home run of his own. 2B Marcos Agramonte contributed three hits and scored twice for a Spirit lineup that saw all but one batter hit safely. Peter Soteropoulis threw a perfect ninth to finish off New Haven, who could muster only three singles on the day - two by RF Derrick Gibson.
NEW JERSEY 10, BROCKTON 6 @ Brockton, Mass. Time: 3:00 ATT: 5,330 W: Aaron Myers (4-2) L: Manny Tejada (3-4) S: None HR: NJ - John Lindsey (6), Rich Gomez (5)
New Jersey finished off a sweep of the Rox with another offensive showcase in the final game of the series in Brockton. Down 3-2 after three, the Jackals pushed two runs across in the process of loading the bases for DH John Lindsey, who put the game away early with a grand slam to right. The homer was part of a perfect day for Lindsey, who went 3-for-3 with enough RBIs to beat the Rox all by himself - seven. Brockton out-hit New Jersey 13-11 with every member of the lineup contributing at least one, but Jackal pitchers implemented effective damage control to preserve the early 8-3 lead.
ELMIRA 10, GRAYS 8 @ Elmira, NY. Time: 2:44 ATT: 744 W: Mike Howell (3-2) L: Brad Esarey (1-3) S: Jose Guzman (2) HR: ELM - Onix Mercado (1) Down 8-1 after seven innings, the Grays pushed three runs across in the eighth to cut the Elmira lead in half. Elmira answered in the inning's bottom half as an error by SS Alex Garcia after a Toshi Suzuki double allowed LF Chad Cooper to score and 1B Onix Mercado's double pushed across the second insurance run of the inning. Undeterred, the Grays continued to pressure Pioneer pitching in the final frame. Two straight singles put runners on the corners for 3B Larry Best, who made the first out of the inning in productive fashion with a sacrifice fly. Two more singles set up another sac fly, this time off the bat of 1B Francisco Lebron. After a walk to DH Willie King, C Brad Hargreaves drove in two with a double. Elmira P Chris Roque walked LF Chad Stewart to load the bases and end his night, but Jose Guzman got Garcia to fly to center with the go-ahead run on base, and end the threat and the game. Suzuki and Mercado led the Pioneer offense with three hits apiece, while Hargreaves drove in three for the Grays.
QUEBEC 5, WORCESTER 4 in 13 innings @ Quebec City, Que. Time: 4:07 ATT: 3,090 W: Min Soo Kim (3-2) L: David Byard (2-1) S: None HR: QUE - Goef Tomlinson (1), Eddie Lantigua (14)
In a game that lasted over four hours, Quebec finally came out on top in the bottom of the 13th. Down 4-1 at one point, Worcester chipped away at the Capitales lead, tying the game at four in the top of the ninth to force extra innings. Despite allowing the ninth inning run, P Cristian Mendoza shut out Worcester for the next two before handing the game over to Min Soo Kim, who allowed three hits in the final two innings but held the Tornadoes scoreless to pick up the win. Goef Tomlinson had his first home run of the season as part of a 4-for-6 day with three RBIs and 3B Eddie Lantigua hit his league-leading 14th homer. Until Quebec plated the winning run with two outs in the 13th, the Worcester bullpen was excellent. Reid Willett, Dallas Mahan, Steve Palazzolo and David Byard threw seven shutout innings following Alex Pena's departure after five. Quebec's victory equalized the records between the two division leaders at 20-8.
