New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters won their sixth game in a row on Saturday night, 6-5 over the New Jersey Jackals but were denied in their attempt at seven, losing the second game of the doubleheader 6-2.
Game one was an up-and-down affair that saw the Cutters barely hold on for the victory. New Haven County drew first blood in the bottom of the fourth when a Chas Terni deep line drive landed in the gap and scored Derrick Gibson from first. But the lead was short-lived as New Jersey got on the board in the top of the fifth and took a 2-1 lead on Ricardo Cordova's sacrifice fly.
The Cutters stormed back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs, highlighted by Gibson's two-run double. With the score 5-1, New Jersey would not lie down and countered with two runs of their own in the sixth.
An insurance run pushed across by the Cutters in the sixth in the form of Andy Larned would prove vital, as the Jackals loaded the bases in the ninth and pulled within one run as former Cutter Darren Ciraco scored Sandy Madera on a sac fly. Reliever Mark Comolli was able to get the final out of the game, and the Cutters escaped with their sixth consecutive win.
The second contest turned out to be a no contest, as New Jersey's starter Joel Bennett was simply too much for the Cutters to handle. Staked to a 4-0 lead, thanks to John Lindsey's two-run double that was immediately followed by a Joe Jiannetti two-run homer, Bennett was in cruise control and only allowed three hits all night, one of which was a towering two-run home run by Jeff Brooks. It was all the Cutters could muster and their winning streak came to a sudden stop.
For the first time in the past four games the Cutters will play a nine-inning contest on Sunday at 2:05. The rubber match of the series will see New Haven County's Tim Keinath (1-3) square off against the Jackals (3-2). The Cutters will host a tribute to wrestling which will feature George "The Animal" Steele. Sunday also celebrates the "Dog Days of Summer." Fans are invited to bring their dog to the park.
