New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters made a pair of roster changes on Monday, completing a two-for-one trade with the New Jersey Jackals and signing pitcher Tim Vasquez.

The trade with New Jersey involves sending rightfielder Darren Ciraco to the Jackals in exchange for outfielder Mike Piercy and a player to be named later.

The left-hand hitting Piercy will add both experience and speed to the Cutters' lineup. Before playing for the Jackals this season, Piercy spent two seasons with the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League, where he fine-tuned his base stealing skills under the tutelage of the all-time major league leader Rickey Henderson, averaging 24 steals a season. In 12 games this year he has pilfered four bases and hit .205.

Piercy has been a farmhand with the Pirates, Mets and Expos organizations over the course of his six-year professional career. The speedy lefthanded hitter entered the season with a .272 career batting average.

Ciraco played in 20 games for the Cutters this season, batting .277 with two home runs and 12 runs batted in. He hit .333 in 28 games last year.

Vasquez joins Piercy in the Cutters clubhouse. The former Edinburg hurler will add depth to the bullpen. In 2004, he posted a 4-1 record with one save and an earned run average of 2.60 in 36 appearances, striking out 50 batters in 52 innings.

Prior to the start of this season, Vasquez had a 6-7 record and an ERA of 3.42 in 64 career appearances. He has spent the last three seasons in the Central League.

Infielder Nelson Samboy, who was injured Saturday and will miss considerable time, was released to make room for Vasquez.

Tickets for the next home series, Friday-Sunday against the North Shore Spirit, can be purchased at www.CuttersBaseball.com, at the Yale Field box office or by calling 203-777-5636.
