Published on June 20, 2005 under Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Brockton SS Saul Bustos and New Jersey RHP Aaron Myers were selected by SportsTicker, the Can-Am League's official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 13-19.
In seven games, Bustos went 14-for-30 with three doubles, two home runs and five RBI as the Rox moved into a tie for second place in the North Division with a 5-2 week. The Odessa, Texas, native hit a dramatic three-run ninth-inning home run Monday in Brockton's eventual 8-7 ten-inning victory over the Grays. On Saturday, Bustos went 3-for-5 with his league-leading 12th and 13th doubles of the season.
Bustos, 32, also leads the Can-Am League with a .382 batting average and 16 extra-base hits in his eighth season in independent baseball, his fourth with the Rox. A thirtieth-round selection out of Texas Tech University by the Chicago Cubs in the 1994 draft, he spent three seasons in the Cubs organization and one in the Montreal system before joining the Northeast League's New Jersey Jackals in 1998. Bustos played in the Northern League with St. Paul in 1999, where he hit .312, and 2000; in the Texas-Louisiana League with Greenville in 2001; and in Brockton since 2002. Last season, he hit .277 with nine home runs and 51 RBI.
Myers dazzled on Thursday, pitching a complete-game, three-hit shutout, striking out ten as the Jackals breezed to a 6-0 victory over Elmira. He also pitched a scoreless two-thirds of an inning in New Jersey's 6-2 loss to Worcester on Sunday, as the Jackals went 3-4 on the week.
The Corona, Calif., native is currently eighth in the league with a 2.78 ERA, second with 30 strikeouts and first with 35.2 innings pitched. Drafted by Colorado in 1994 in the seventeenth round as a third baseman, he spent four seasons in the Rockies system before converting to a pitcher and playing another four years as a Brewers farmhand. Now in his fourth season with New Jersey, Myers, 28, led the Northeast League with 113 strikeouts last year.
