
Cutters Pound Pioneers 8-3

(Elmira, NY- August 27th, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters opened their final road trip of the season on a positive note, defeating the Elmira Pioneers 8-3 on Friday night at Dunn Field. The Cutters are now 8 and 1 this season against Elmira.
After a scoreless first, the Cutters tagged Joe Van Gorder for four runs in the second. After Jimmy Hurst walked to lead off the inning, Aaron Fera singled and Jeff Brooks walked to load the bases for Nick Hiter. The New Haven catcher delivered a RBI single for the game's first run, giving the Cutters an early lead.
Later in the inning, P.J. Johnston's drive to left field was misplayed by Jason Bryan allowing two more runs to score. Johnston was credited with a two RBI double on the play and the Cutters had a 3-0 lead. Van Gorder then threw a wild pitch allowing Hiter to score from third making it 4-0.
In the sixth, Jeff Brooks remained red-hot, hitting a triple off the right field wall and then coming around to score on a throwing error by Steve Checksfield extending the New Haven lead to 5-1.
After Elmira trimmed the lead to three on a Cleatus Davidson RBI double in the bottom of the inning, New Haven regained their four run lead in the seventh on a RBI sacrifice fly from Aaron Fera scoring Luis Santiago.
With the score 6-3 in the ninth, New Haven tacked on two more runs on bases loaded singles by Jeff Brooks and Kevin Forbes giving the Cutters a commanding 8-3 lead. Greg McCarthy wrapped up the game for New Haven, tossing a scoreless ninth in a non save situation. Cutters starter Skip Wiley (5-7) allowed two runs over six innings to earn the win. Joe Van Gorder (6-6) tossed six innings, surrendering five runs on five hits and took the loss.
The Cutters continue their series with the Elmira Pioneers on Saturday at 7:05. Both Saturday and Sunday's games can be heard on AM 1150 WMRD. New Haven returns home to open up their final home stand of the season on September 1st that will go through Labor Day weekend.
