New Haven County Cutters News Release
Runs were scored like they were going out of style during the New Haven County Cutters home opener on Monday night. No pitcher was safe as the Grays and the Cutters pounded out a combined 19 runs on 27 hits with the Grays coming out of top 11-8.
2253 fans were in attendance for the 4 hour and 15 minute marathon that featured 9 pitchers.
The Grays were first to strike as they knocked in two runs in the top of the first against starter Jordy Alexander. A quick response came from the Cutters as they tied up the game thanks to a Darren Ciraco fielder's choice run batted in and an Andy Larned RBI single.
The Cutters took a 7-5 lead in the fourth as they batted around and knocked Grays starter Jodie Kennedy from the game. DH Nick Hiter started things off with a ground rule double and scored on a Keith Stegbauer single. Left-handed slugger Bill Peavey, who started in left field, continued the rally by knocking in two, Keto Anderson and Chas Terni, on a scorched line drive to right center.
It was not Alexander's finest outing. He was chased from the game in the fifth as the Grays took a lead they would not relinquish. Grays leadoff man, Greg Strickland, was a constant menace at the plate and on the base paths, as he went 4 for 5 and was the catalyst for multiple Grays' rallies with his base stealing prowess.
Stegbauer, who was batting .500 entering the game, stayed hot, going 2 for 4, scoring and knocking in a run.
Darren Ciraco hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth to bring the Cutters within three runs but the team could get no closer even as they loaded the bases in their final at bat.
The loss leaves the Cutters still searching for their first victory of the season. They will look to Rolando Valles to break the five game losing streak tomorrow at 7:05 at Yale Field. The Grays starter has yet to be determined.
