Cutters Let One Slip Away Against Jackals

July 16, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters and the New Jersey Jackals reversed roles from Friday night's game, as it was the Jackals who were able to come from behind on Saturday and narrowly edge the Cutters 4-3.

Both team's starting pitchers were effective and the game quickly turned into a classic pitchers duel. Courtney Hall delivered his second strong outing in a row against New Jersey, going seven innings, surrendering six base hits and allowing only one earned run.

The same could be said about Jackals starter Joe Orloski, who was sharp for the second consecutive start against the Cutters. He went six and one third innings and gave up three runs, none of which were earned.

In a fitting twist of irony, neither starting pitcher would figure in the decision as the game was decided by the bullpens.

With the Cutters leading 3-2, the Jackals roared back in the top of the eighth. Consecutive singles by Ricardo Cordova and Sandy Madera followed by John Lindsey's RBI base hit brought home the tying run and advanced Madera to third. He reached home when Elvis Corporan drove a fly ball to left field that was caught by Mike O'Keefe but was deep enough get the run across.

The Cutters have shown a proclivity for staging late inning rallies, but tonight were mowed down one-two-three in the bottom of the ninth by Fabricio Benitez.

Sunday is not only the rubber match of this three-game series, but also the last game before the All-Star break and the last home game for the Cutters until July 25. In addition to being Family Fun Day and Kids Eat Free Sunday, New Haven County is hosting a food drive with the Connecticut Food Bank. Fans who make a donation will receive a voucher for a free ticket to a future Cutters' game.

Rolando Valles (2-4) will make the start for the Cutters against Joel Bennett (4-0) of the Jackals.
