Cutters Fall in Series Final Against Quebec
June 5, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
The day after smacking 16 hits around Yale Field, the New Haven County Cutters' bats were relatively silent for most of Sunday afternoon's game against Quebec. The Cutters could only manage to scrape across two late runs before ultimately falling 3-2 to Les Capitales, who managed to salvage a split in the four-game series.
It was obvious from the start of the game that runs were going to be tough to come by. Both starters, Darwin Marrero of Les Capitals and the Cutters' Rolando Valles, were able to keep hitters off balance with a variety of pitches, arm angles and speeds. Valles pitched seven innings allowing only one earned run. Marrero worked into the eighth but ran into trouble and was replaced by Christian Mendoza with the outcome of the game still very much in the balance.
Third baseman Jeff Brooks rattled a double that scored Mike O?Keefe and put runners on second and third with one out. Chas Terni and pinch hitter Dennis Hine were unable to capitalize and the inning ended with the score 3-1.
The Cutters had a chance to tie or win the game in the ninth. Orlando Encarnacion, who led off the inning with a walk, scored on a two-out Vinny Esposito single, bringing the score to 3-2. Andy Larned came in to pinch run for Esposito after the left-fielder pulled up lame running to second base. A wild pitch moved Larned to third with O'Keefe at the plate. O'Keefe hit a line drive into right center that looked like it might fall in between outfielders Geoffrey Tomlinson and Benoit Emond, but was run down by Tomlinson.
After an off-day on Monday, the Cutters hit the road for six straight games against Massachusetts opponents. On Tuesday the Cutters start a three-game set in North Shore, followed by three games in Brockton.
