New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters were shutout for the fourth time this season on Saturday night, falling to the Worcester Tornadoes 6-0 at Yale Field.
Having clinched a playoff spot the previous night the Cutters used the game as a chance to rest some key players and give some pitchers some extra work. Starter Brad Whitworth (5-4) looked as crisp as ever, though, tossing five inning and surrendering just one unearned run, while striking out eight. But he was saddled with the tough luck loss, as his team failed to give him any support.
The Tornadoes got an inspired outing from starter Junior Guerrero (6-4). He matched Whitworth pitch for pitch, hurling five innings of three-hit ball. He fanned seven New Haven County batters.
The outcome of the game was left in the hands of the bullpens and it was the Tornadoes relievers who would get the job done. Dallas Mahan and David Byard combined to throw four scoreless innings to preserve the shutout and the win for Guerrero. Byard picked up his 13th save along the way.
Three Worcester batters hit home runs, all solo shots. Alex Nunez and Josh Beauregard each hit four-baggers in the eighth, followed by Zach Strong's dinger in the ninth. Beauregard drove in three and Nunez tallied a pair of ribbies.
Keto Anderson hit his second triple in as many nights for the home team, one of four hits mustered by the Cutters.
Game three of the four game set is on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. It is a "Kids Eat Free" Sunday along with a "Family Fun Day." Jarrett Stawarz (8-7) pitches for the Cutters. Worcester's starter has yet to be announced.
