WASHINGTON, Pa. - For the third time in his career, right-handed pitcher Chase Cunningham has been selected as the Frontier League's Pitcher of the Week. The Frontier League announced today that Cunningham received this past week's honor, for his performance in a win over Windy City Saturday.
Each week, Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation, selects the honorees.
In his only start during the week under the microscope, the 2017 Frontier League All Star earned his seventh win of the season and seventh win of his career against the Windy City ThunderBolts. Cunningham started Saturday's 1-0 win, and as the score leads to assume, pitched very well.
In eight scoreless innings, the former Belmont University standout allowed just six hits and spun three double play balls, while fanning three T'Bolts. He did not walk a batter. The success was a continuation of Cunningham's domination of Windy City in his three-year Wild Things' career at Standard Bank Stadium. After the eight scoreless, Cunningham has still only allowed three runs in Crestwood, Illinois, in 41 innings of work. He's allowed just one at the stadium since August of 2016.
This marks the fifth weekly honor for a Wild Thing in 2018, and the second this season for Cunningham, who was named Pitcher of the Week for the league June 10. His first weekly award came last season on July 3.
Cunningham and the Wild Things have a magic number of eight for a return to the postseason in 2018, as the franchise looks for back-to-back trips to the Frontier League playoffs for the first time since 2006-07. Washington opens its final regular-season homestand Tuesday, August 21 at 7:05 p.m. with the first of three against the 2017 Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers.
