January 8, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL) - San Angelo Stampede Express News Release

The Stampede Express will have new leadership in 2009. Sonny Cumbie has been named Head Coach for the Stampede Express for the 2009 season. Cumbie is no stranger to west Texas as he graduated high school from Snyder High School and then went on to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders at the quarterback position.

While at Texas Tech Cumbie led the NCAA in passing during the 2004 season throwing for 4,742 yards. Cumbie ended his career at Tech by throwing for a career high 520 yards, leading the Red Raiders past the No. 4 ranked California 45-31 in the 2004 Holiday Bowl.

After his college career Cumbie went on to sign a deal to play with the Indianapolis Colts and was later released, he then signed a deal to play with the Baltimore Ravens and later released. Cumbie signed in October of 2005 to play with the LA Avengers of the Arena Football league. During his 3 seasons with the Avengers Sonny earned AFL Rookie of the year honors, set an Avenger team record by throwing 212 consecutive passes without an interception, in 2006 completed 268-of-450 passes for 3,241 yards and 59 touchdowns, and in 2007 led the Avengers to the playoff while throwing 83 touchdowns passes and 4,370 yards.

In his spare time Sonny is a color commentator on the Texas Tech Football Radio Network. Sonny currently resides in Lubbock, TX with his wife Tamra. "We are elated to have a coach with the amount of knowledge of the indoor game that Sonny possesses here in San Angelo," states owner Darlene Jones.

The 2008 special teams team was so successful that Coach John Palmer has been signed on to lead the special teams again in 2009. Palmer will start his 3rd year with the Express and his 2nd season as a coach. Palmer is also a retired police officer with the San Angelo Police Department.

The Stampede Express will begin their 6th season, with the first home game being April 4th versus the Colorado Ice at 7:05 at the San Angelo Coliseum.
