Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks have sold the contract of RHP Brandon Culp to the Oakland Athletics organization, the Northern League club announced today. Culp is the third player from the 2005 RedHawks to have his contract sold to a Major League club, joining LHP Brantley Jordan (Boston Red Sox) and OF Brent Krause (Minnesota Twins).

Culp, 28, put together one of the most dominating seasons in Northern League history in 2005. He finished the regular season a perfect 14-0 in 18 starts (20 appearances) with a 2.60 ERA. In 117.2 innings pitched, Culp allowed 40 runs (34 earned) on 101 hits. He struck out 70 batters, walked 46 and held opponents to a .230 batting average against him. Culp ended the season second overall in victories and fourth in ERA.

Culp was named the Northern League Pitcher of the Year following the season and was also named to Baseball America's Independent League All-Star First Team. Culp was also the starting pitcher fort the West Division at the 2005 Northern League All-Star Game.

Culp began his professional career in 2000 after being drafted in the 26th round by the Cincinnati Reds organization following his college career at Jacksonville (Ala.) State University. He spent four seasons in the Reds system before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies prior to the 2004 season. He advanced to the Reading Phillies of the Eastern League and signed with the RedHawks for 2005.

"Brandon obviously proved he's ready to move out of the Northern League," said RedHawks manager Doug Simunic. "He's a big-time competitor and was a workhorse for us. He's going to get a great opportunity with Oakland."
