Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Risinger, a native of Australia who was known to fans at U. S. Steel Yard as "the thunder from down under," was a huge addition to the RailCats in July of 2005 and played a major role in the club's Northern League title. He started all 10 RailCats playoff games at first base and batted .432 in the post-season while leading the team in home runs (3) and runs batted in (12).
During the regular season, Risinger batted .310 with three home runs and 17 runs batted in for the RailCats. The "ËCats posted a record of 15-8 (.652) in the 23 regular season games that Risinger appeared in.
"Our 2005 ballclub seemed to have every ingredient that we needed with one exception, and Ben turned out to be that guy," said RailCats manager Greg Tagert. "He was the perfect addition to our club, a great pro on the field and in the clubhouse. Ben was our difference maker in the post-season and we all wish him the best of luck in the Padres organization."
Risinger joined the RailCats after being released by the Padres' Triple-A club, the Portland Beavers, earlier in the 2005 season. He has spent eight years in professional baseball.
Risinger becomes the eighth member of the RailCats to be sent to a major league organization since the RailCats' inception in 2002. He joins pitchers Justin Craker, Tim Byrdak, Sazi Guthrie, Jake Upwood (all purchased by the San Diego Padres) and Dominic Woody (purchased by Seattle Mariners) and catchers Rich Rodrigues (purchased by Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) and C.J. Medlin (purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers).
RailCats merchandise and 2006 ticket plans are available now. Call (219) 882-2255 or stop by the gift shop at U. S. Steel Yard at One Stadium Plaza in Gary.
