Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Charlie Culberson's third hit of the night drove in the winning run for the Augusta GreenJackets in the 11th inning, propelling Augusta to a 7-6 win over the Rome Braves on the first night of the second half of the season.
Augusta scored their other six runs on two-run home runs, with two of the blasts coming off the bat of Josh Mazzola - the first time a single GreenJacket has hit multiple home runs in a game this season.
Rome struck first with three straight two-out hits off Augusta starter Kyle Nicholson. RBI singles by Shayne Moody and Chris Shehan gave the Braves an early lead until Johnny Monell provided the first of the three two-run home runs in the fifth inning, tying the score at two apiece.
Mazzola's first home run of the game in the sixth gave the Jackets a 4-2 lead that lasted until the eighth, when Nicholson ran out of gas and gave way to Edwin Quirarte. Joel Campusano's RBI single off Quirarte closed the book on Nicholson and pulled Rome to within a run. With the bases full and one out, Braden Schlehuber was hit on the wrist by a Quirarte offering to bring in the tying run. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Moody's second hit of the day gave the Braves their first lead at 6-4.
In the eighth, Mazzola struck again with his second home run of the night to tie the game at eight, where it remained until the 11th. Both teams had their chances as Augusta left two on in the ninth and one aboard in the 10th. Rome's chances were far greater - with one on and one out in the tenth, catcher Matt Kennelly drove one well over the left-field fence, but ruled foul. Rome manager Randy Ingle was ejected arguing the call - a call which many Braves were up in arms over, but one that was not overturned. Kennelly grounded out and the Jackets escaped the threat.
Shane Kaufman (2-1) picked up the win for the Jackets, striking out two in a perfect 11th. Chris Wilson provided two scoreless innings of one-hit relief prior to Kaufman to keep the GreenJackets in the game.
