Cudas Beat the Havoc in Overtime

Jacksonville Barracudas News Release

The Tank was rocking Wednesday night as the Jacksonville Barracudas gave the hometown crowd an intense, exciting 2-1 overtime victory against the Huntsville Havoc, in the one-game, sudden-death playoff round.

A beautiful second period goal from captain Brad Federenko put the Cudas up one headed into the third period. Federenko showed the veteran patience and poise as he beat his defender to the front of the net, and then waited for Havoc goaltender Matt Carmichael to make the first move, before going top-shelf with the puck just under the crossbar. Jason Silverthorn and Greg Lecolst assisted on the goal.

The lead lasted till mid-way through the third period, before a spat of penalties against the Cudas lead to a power play goal by Huntsville's Jeff Dams. The last ten minutes of regulation play provided flurries of chances around both nets, with Cudas' goaltender Kelly Shields coming up huge to preserve the tie, and send the game into sudden death overtime.

Unlike the regular season, in the playoffs overtime is played at 5-on-5, with 20-minute periods until a team scores. It took just six minutes for Silverthorn, Lecolst, and Federenko to end the game, as they used a series of passes to elude the Havoc defenders and bring Carmichael out of position, before Silverthorn was able to put the puck into the back of the net. The Tank erupted, the Cudas flooded the ice, and one of the most exciting hockey games in recent Jacksonville memory was over.
